Grief is an entirely normal, involuntary, and healthy response to loss. It is also a profound, confusing, even shattering experience in the very best of circumstances. Grieving in today’s world, however, is made even more complicated by, among other things, the widespread presence of grief illiteracy. Our closest friends and family might not know how to respond to our experiences of loss, and we might not even know how to respond to ourselves. As a result, the inherent sense of isolation often accompanying bereavement can be magnified to absurd proportions. Grief, today, easily and often ushers in an extreme sense of aloneness.
