I have a motto I try to live by which is "Pain is real, suffering is optional". I try to frame this concept with every new person I see. We all get pain, no one gets a pass on this. Some pain is of our own doing. Other pain just comes to us without doing anything. I try to help people recognize what pain they may be harboring and help them learn how to turn down the intensity of their suffering. I love to see individuals discover new ways of coping, thinking, and behaving to improve and most importantly empower themselves.
While it is impossible not to feel your emotions, it is within each person's power to manage them more effectively. I try to teach people how to tap into that power. I try to move people away from "I can't" thinking to "How I can do it".
The client needs to feel a connection with the therapist before any work can begin. I try to make sure that the client feels safe, comfortable, and connected with me before diving too deep into the issues they came to discuss. Some individuals just need time to unfold their lives.
