Carl E Pickhardt Ph.D.
Married with four children and three grandchildren, Carl Pickhardt is a psychologist in private counseling and public lecturing practice in Austin, Texas. He is the author of 16 parenting books as well as books of illustrated psychology, young adult, and children's fiction. He is also a graphic artist. (See his website for more.) He received his B.A. and M.Ed. from Harvard, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a member of the American and Texas Psychological Associations. He has written columns for the Austin American Statesman ("Parenting the Teenager"), for the Austin Business Journal, Single Parent Magazine, Marriage and Family Living Magazine, Austin 360.com, and for Only Child Magazine (for which he is a contributing editor). In 1988 he did weekly TV interviews about family life for Channel 24 (ABC, Austin). He has also been a guest on a Phil Donahue Show, Parentz 101 (FOX), Family Digest (Cable), and has done interviews for radio including Parents Journal and the Armin Brott Show. He regularly sources articles for the print media about parenting, family, and adolescence. In 2010 he was on ABC, NBC, CNN, and NPR, as well as sourcing major articles for the Time Magazine cover story, "The Only Child Myth" (July 19, 2010) and the lead feature story in the Wall Street Journal, "The Only Child -- A dose of sibling rivalry," (August 10, 2010). His most recent of 16 parenting books is Holding On While Letting Go: Parenting Your Child Through the Four Freedoms of Adolescence (2022).
