Everybody faces challenges at different stages of life. Some greater than others. I am always amazed at the strength of the human spirit and the will to survive. My aim is to help the client to focus on their strengths (rather than their weaknesses). Furthermore to capitalise on their strengths and to realise their full potential. In times of crisis people tend to forget that they have actually overcome so much in life already and given the support they need, they will be able continue to do so. My motto is: Never Give Up. Don’t underestimate yourself. There is always a Plan B!

No doubt you are looking at this site because you want something in your life to change. You want to feel better, get out of a repetitive rut, make some relationship changes or improvements, or just feel better within your own skin. My clients find it a huge relief to share and process their concerns - within the safe space of my counselling room or via secure online therapy. I believe strongly in a gentle therapy method - a non-judgemental and compassionate attitude - creating a safe, nurturing space for healing and change to begin. I am very aware of how vulnerable one feels in making that first appointment. It is worth it!

Therapy may feel like a big step towards improving our mental health, so congratulations on wanting to take the first step! The goal of therapy is to alleviate emotional distress through insight into ourselves and others. Occupational therapy promotes mental health and well-being through occupation. Occupations include things you need to, want to and are expected to do. Occupational therapy will help: If the daily challenges of life feel overwhelming, if you’ve just experienced a major life change and need help adjusting to a 'new normal', or if you’ve just completed inpatient or primary treatment and are wondering "what next?"

If you are feeling unable to cope, or are struggling to break out of old habits or self-defeating patterns, you don't have to navigate the journey to well-being alone. Together, we can find and integrate the tools you need to reconnect with a valued life, and to build a healthier, more compassionate relationship with yourself. I am well equipped to help individuals with a variety of conditions including mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, and the autism spectrum; however, you do not need a diagnosis to need support. We all get stuck in unhelpful ways of thinking and doing; it's part of being human.

Emma-Louise is a Clinical Neuropsychologist based in the Cape Town's southern suburbs. People usually consult a neuropsychologist because they have a known brain injury (e.g. traumatic or stroke), disease process (e.g. dementia), or because they feel that there has been a change in their cognition or behaviour and they suspect there may be an organic cause (of which there are many). Emma-Louise works with clients to understand the changes in their brain and importantly, to find ways to continue to live meaningfully with them.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
