In my practice, I see clients from all walks of life, they often have one thing in common, trauma. Each individual’s experience with trauma is unique, just like our DNA is unique to us. There is no one size fits all method to unpacking and processing what has been traumatic to you. Therefore, it is a collaboration between myself, the counsellor and you, the client, to ensure that the therapeutic process is successful in reaching the goals you have set out to reach. Clients who want to gain control over disempowering moments and memories in a safe environment will feel at home in my office.

Taking the first step in your mental health is a brave venture. Finding the right therapist for this process is important. Therapeutic relationships should provide you with a sense of safety to explore the most vulnerable parts of you. In the words of Brené Brown "Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light."

I am a Registered Counsellor with the HPCSA (PRC 0041815) and have a special interest in working with trauma. I am passionate about helping those who feel overwhelmed by life. Often, we do not realise where these feelings of overwhelm originate from. And even if we know, we might need help to address them. Sometimes, overwhelm stems from our relationships, finances, parenting, health, career choices/work, and expectations regarding sports performance . At other times, we may have experienced a traumatic event. This might cause anxiousness, fearfulness, helplessness, restlessness, or an intense sense of feeling out of control.

Hi I am Shayen founder of counselling practice, Nurturing Minds. In my practice I utilize an Holistic Approach, that focuses on integration of mind, body and soul as interconnected. As we cannot focus on the mind without taking into consideration for example 1) the different physical symptoms/sensations experienced and 2) the core valies/belief systems/faith that each individual believe in or grew up with. As all of these play an integral role in establishing optimal well-being and a sense harmony and fulfillment in one's life. Nurturing Minds therefore has a Non-Discriminary Policy, that welcomes people from all backgrounds/faiths.

People come to therapy for a variety of reasons, some to gain a better understanding of themselves, some to deal with difficult or complex life situations or relationships, and some to deal with diagnosable psychiatric/psychological conditions. I offer a safe, non-judgemental and empathic space in which your individuality will be respected. I facilitate a safe therapeutic emotional connection to help you feel comfortable, heard, and emotionally held.

I have devoted most of my career to working predominantly with Eating Disorders and anxiety, and have learned the importance of a balanced approach of both accountability and compassion. Prior to my work in this field, I have always had an interest in women's health issues and my work experience includes obesity, infertility, adoption, addiction, body image, couples therapy and building self esteem in young adults. My approach is holistic and client-centered, as I believe in meeting my clients where they are and walking the journey alongside them.

I believe the way a person thinks, influences their emotions which impacts on their behaviour. Therefore examining foundational thinking and values will foster healing of emotions and eventually lead to change in behavior. Do you feel like you don't have a voice, helpless and marginalized. Come to the counseling space to process life issues.

As a counsellor, I value the beautifully unique qualities that define you. If you feel disconnected from your true self or misunderstood, counselling can help rekindle that connection and foster a deeper relationship with yourself. We’ll explore ways to engage more fully with your surroundings and relationships. I also use Eye Movement Integration (EMI) to help process and resolve emotional issues through guided eye movements. My mission is to empower individuals and couples to rediscover their strength and potential for positive change.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
