No doubt you are looking at this site because you want something in your life to change. You want to feel better, get out of a repetitive rut, make some relationship changes or improvements, or just feel better within your own skin. My clients find it a huge relief to share and process their concerns - within the safe space of my counselling room or via secure online therapy. I believe strongly in a gentle therapy method - a non-judgemental and compassionate attitude - creating a safe, nurturing space for healing and change to begin. I am very aware of how vulnerable one feels in making that first appointment. It is worth it!

Gerda Kriel is a Clinical Psychologist with experience in both private and public sector. She has a special interest in working with infant and maternal mental health challenges, but also sees clients who struggle with depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, PTSD or phase-of-life-challenges. Her approach is informed by Narrative therapy, but she also works in more structured modalities such as Eye movement integration and Resource therapy for clients with trauma.

Welcome! Whatever has led you here, please know that I would be honoured to hear and hold your story, to talk with you, and to share tools and techniques to help you move forward and create the life that is in your heart. We all have moments in our lives where we find ourselves just not coping; that feeling of constantly treading water with no end in sight; struggling with overwhelm, burnout, stress, fatigue, anger, or anxiety, doubting ourselves and never feeling good enough; being in conflict with others or feeling alone. Perhaps you have gone through a traumatic situation or major life transition?

Life gets overwhelming sometimes, for all of us. Even the strongest and most resilient people need help from time to time. Courageous people know when to seek help in order to augment their own resources, to facilitate truncated bounce back cycles. Covid-19 has demonstrated that most of us do not flourish in isolation. You need not journey alone. I work with adults, adolescents (15 years and above), and couples, providing a warm, confidential and supportive psychotherapeutic environment. Trained in Brain-Working Recursive Therapy (BWRT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

I like to describe our therapy together as a journey where we walk alongside each other. I won't offer advice but instead encourage curiosity for us to shine light on the hidden truth which we are all capable of finding within ourselves. Movement Psychotherapy - in which I have specialized - while welcoming talking intervention and the spoken language, rather shifts the focus to body movement, trusting the language of the body. - Embodiment. This therapy is creative in its nature meaning we use different modes of art in our explorations. You can expect mindfulness, movement, music, art and play in our sessions.

Cedar Psychology was established to cater to different mental health needs within a safe, non-judgmental and containing environment. We all have our ups and downs, where support from family and friends can be enough to help us manage our stress. Sometimes we may feel that we need more. Some may enter therapy because they have felt sad, worried, confused, angry, or numb for a long time, or would like help processing their past. Others may enter therapy because of sudden life changes such as the loss of a loved one, work/school stressors or relationship difficulties. Whatever your reason may be, support is available.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
