My clients tend to have various life challenges. These can range from stress, anxiety, depression and suicidality to loss/grief, life transitions, coping with chronic diagnosis, couples counselling, career counselling and more. The need tends to be to address the challenges, promote self-discovery and mental health, find a collaborative support structure and to find ways of developing tools that will assist them beyond the counselling space. In the end counselling is about trying to find a way to reshape your life/approach/perspective to something that better fits who you are as a person and to gain a sense of personal well-being.

I specialise in individual therapy (adolescents, adults & geriatrics), couples therapy and group therapy.
Cedar Psychology was established to cater to different mental health needs within a safe, non-judgmental and containing environment. We all have our ups and downs, where support from family and friends can be enough to help us manage our stress. Sometimes we may feel that we need more. Some may enter therapy because they have felt sad, worried, confused, angry, or numb for a long time, or would like help processing their past. Others may enter therapy because of sudden life changes such as the loss of a loved one, work/school stressors or relationship difficulties. Whatever your reason may be, support is available.

As humans, we are social beings. We, therefore, need to form relationships with one another, in order to feel "whole". When an individual reaches out for help with their mental health, they start a cycle of healing. Mentally healthy individuals create healthy families, which spills over into healthy communities, and ultimately, a healthy society. So although I have a passion for working with couples and families - building, restoring and maintaining functional relationships, starts with each individual.

The quality of our relationships has a significant impact on our happiness and physical health. If we feel disconnected and misunderstood or are struggling to cope emotionally with our lives, we can quickly feel despairing and alone. Some problems just seem to escalate or repeat themselves without being resolved. My great passion is bringing healing to people’s relationships with others and within themselves. I help my clients to find greater emotional freedom, inner security and resilience, as well as helping them to build and maintain healthy relationships so that they feel more peaceful and meaningfully connected with others.

I focus on couples and individuals experiencing relational and emotional distress. My couple work is a structured approach to build hope, trust and connection whilst guiding the couple into more productive ways of communicating and connecting which allow their needs to be met more effectively. I use primarily Emotionally Focused Therapy and borrowing also from the work of Hedy Shleifer and Imago attachment principles. This is deep work aimed at moving the couple away from pain and negativity, as they are guided on an empowering journey of healing and self discovery.

Through a compassionate, empathetic & client-centered approach I aim to foster a trusting strong therapeutic relationship, ensuring that my clients receive the personalized support they need to overcome their challenges.
I have always been interested in understanding why people think and feel the way they do and how this may inform their behavior. As a result, I aim to work with clients to gain understanding of themselves, by accompanying them in their therapeutic journey of self discovery where they can realize their choices as to discover meaning and purpose in their lives, even in the face of adversity.

I consult clients who struggle with a variety of issues such as addiction, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma, burn-out, work stress, coping, self-esteem and relationship problems.
All of us at some point might need support to deal with the many challenges of life, whether it be a personal crisis, a loss, an addiction, a feeling of stuckness or a change in one's ability to cope. I offer compassionate and non-judgemental psychotherapy for adolescents and adults. It is not always easy to take the first step to start therapy and to be vulnerable, but allowing yourself to open up is often the start of the journey towards acceptance or change.

Couples counselling, and family/group counselling.
Build to Strength was birthed in a very sensitive time in Cape Town, South Africa; where its citizens didn’t only face a physical health challenge, but in its enormity it was apparent to Janine Liedeman, the head counsellor and founder that her academic foundation had to marry her passion to help many battling with emotional wellbeing. It was then that her practice was opened, in 2020 to help individuals, couples, and families alike to manage the ever-demanding changes and effects of a balanced life by journeying with people and companies equipping them with tools to function in what otherwise be overwhelming stress and dysfunction

Couples Counselling
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
