The stigma attached to mental health issues has a potential to drive you to your lowest and you will fail to live up to your potential. Mental health problems have nothing to do with losing one's mind but everything to do with our everyday functioning. Thus, we live each moment and take each day as it comes. If you are struggling with stress, anxiety due to work related issues, marital issues, parenting issues, abuse, substance use, suicidal thoughts and grief see the therapist. Your mental wellbeing matters, you matter.

In my practice I use a person-centred approach, ensuring that I allow us to know each other and provide an environment that allows you to feel free to share, knowing that you are not judged and all conversations are treated with confidentiality. Through attentive listening, I aim to first establish where you are as a client. We would then look at what the presenting problem is and guide you through to acknowledge how you have contributed to the situation you are in. We look into what your expectations of the session are and work through a treatment plan to ensure your expectations can be met.

I work with individuals (adolescents and adults), couples and families who need psychological assistance and/or relationship tools. I am a compassionate psychotherapist, with an additional certification as an Imago Relationship Therapist. I am also qualified to run Imago "Getting The Love you Want" workshops for couples. I do not believe that labelling a client as a "problem" is helpful; rather, the therapeutic process with me is about creating self-awareness, and working together to find creative solutions to the challenges that are facing each person that walks through my door. I encourage personal growth in all my clients.

Therapy has become very clinical in the pathological world we live in. I focus on ways to make ethical, value-based choices that help you build a purposeful, meaningful life. I use an Existentialist approach (Humanistic) while and my methods generally follow Acceptance & Commitment Therapy guidelines. I have a unique perspective on many issues from my experience in life from personal challenges: raised in poverty, suffering male-anorexia, failed early-life relationships and 20 yrs. as an entrepreneur. This lived experience helps me be an effective counsellor, mental health speaker and provide ethical services as a life-coach.

Life is tough, sometimes very tough. Us, as human beings often forget to take care of the most basic of our needs in favor of immediate responsibilities and often put off the things that fuel us - when our fuel runs out, we are left with the wreckage and very little motivation to pick up those pieces. The healing journey offers a space to recuperate and learn to know and love ourselves again and to remember that sometimes its okay to not be okay. I journey with those who come see me, and noting is more beautiful and rewarding for to see someone transform their lives into something they have always wanted.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
