My name is Nayana, pronounced "9na"/ "Nine-nah". When it comes to counselling, I believe that the sustained impact of a Client's counselling work actually begins when they leave my counselling space; where they, independently, apply what they've learnt and pursue a healthier relationship with themself and the environments they interact with. For this purpose, I collaborate with my Client to create a safe space to explore, acknowledge, and develop an understanding of their internal dynamics, coping mechanisms, and opportunities for change. I use relevant counselling approaches that are tailored to meet each Clients' unique needs.

Life can be very challenging. We are sometimes faced with situations that are beyond our control, such as the loss of a loved one or the actions of our partners and families. We are not always in control of the experiences life gives us, but we are in control of how we deal with them. At times even our own actions or decisions cause us stress and pain. Whichever journey it is that you need to explore in order to heal and grow, remember to reach out for help. You do not have to go through it alone.

Each individual and their way of thinking deserve to be understood in their particular context, in terms of lifestyle, culture, and beliefs. Disorder in ourselves and our relationships is a manifestation of unmet needs. The pain and distress we experience is often what brings us to therapy, as a problem to sort out but in fact, this pain response is an adaptive and survival orientated signal, telling us to pay attention. These signals are built in mechanisms communicating to us that something is out of balance; and we need to do something in order to restore our sense of balance. If we try to ignore the message or suppress it with substances or distraction, the symptoms do not disappear but but rather become amplified. Chaos and discomfort are fertile soil for change.

When we lived in villages, speaking to someone specifically equipped with skills when we had difficulties in our lives was a normal as breathing. Counselling has an origin as ancient as the genesis of humankind. Now that many of us are no longer in "the village", therapists play this critical role. Many people have believed that seeing a psychotherapist is only for people suffering from a mental illness. Therapy is not only treating mental health problems, it is about recognising the need for support, which we all need, during difficult parts of our lives. Therapy is about supporting healing, wellness and growth.

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
