People usually seek help from a psychologist when they want something to change. This desire for change may be motivated by painful thoughts and feelings, a situation at work, school, or at home, a challenging event, or relationships with others. Sometimes people work with a psychologist because they want a better understanding of themselves, to change behaviours, or to develop new skills to support their well-being. If any of this is true for you or for someone you care about, getting in contact with a psychologist is a useful step to take.

I work with people of all ages. People differ from each other and their experience of trauma and difficulty also differ. Our joys and suffering are as unique as our fingerprints. "Talk therapy" is a very important part of therapy, but sometimes something broader is needed. For this reason, practical methods involving the whole body are used. Here are two comments from two of my clients: "Rina goes beyond the call of duty. She creates a safe and comfortable environment Her methods are so subtle I don't even feel like I'm in a therapy session, but the results from the sessions are astounding. "

My particular areas of interest are parent-infant psychotherapy, perinatal and postnatal mental health, women's health and fertility, depression, anxiety, childhood trauma, relationship difficulties, personality disorders and acute psychosis.
My goal is to work together with the client, in a warm and empathic environment to uncover and understand the root causes of emotional difficulties. I explore with the client, unhelpful and unhealthy patterns of being and relating to others, from childhood throughout to adulthood. My goal is to help the client become aware of these behaviors so they might work towards healthier ways of coping and relating to others, thus living a more emotionally fulfilling life.

Often, how we navigate our traumas is informed by our relationships with our primary attachment figures. So, while I have found that "here and now" work is useful, my experience has taught me that there is no point in resolving what is on the surface if we have never attempted to deal with the root of the problem. I therefore pride myself in taking time to thoroughly understand people, so that we can work towards a more long-term form of healing.

As a psychologist I am constantly amazed by peoples’ resilience and capacity to overcome tremendous hardship. I feel privileged when clients confide and share that which is deeply painful. It is an honour to embark on a therapeutic journey with with my clients. I have also developed a keen understanding of the level of investment that is required in order to manage overwhelming feelings in productive ways. I prioritise creating a non-judgemental thinking space in the hope that it will enable clients to find themselves and attempt to establish meaning amidst uncertainty.

No doubt you are looking at this site because you want something in your life to change. You want to feel better, get out of a repetitive rut, make some relationship changes or improvements, or just feel better within your own skin. My clients find it a huge relief to share and process their concerns - within the safe space of my counselling room or via secure online therapy. I believe strongly in a gentle therapy method - a non-judgemental and compassionate attitude - creating a safe, nurturing space for healing and change to begin. I am very aware of how vulnerable one feels in making that first appointment. It is worth it!

Embarking on the path to self-discovery and healing can be both courageous and daunting. It takes strength to recognise the need for support and seek help. If you're here, you've already taken a significant step toward prioritising your well-being, and I want to acknowledge the courage it takes to begin this journey. I understand that the decision to start therapy is not always an easy one. It can be accompanied by a range of emotions – from hope and anticipation to uncertainty and vulnerability. Rest assured, this is a safe space where your experiences are honored, and you're met with empathy and understanding.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
