As Mahatma Gandhi said: “You can’t change how people treat you or what they say about you. All you can do is change how you react to it.” I believe that we all sometimes need help to manage how we are reacting to the situations in our lives. Hence, the first step in therapy is understanding what is happening in your life & deciding how we can change it.

Although I predominantly work from an integrated Psychodynamic (insight-based) approach as well as Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT). I do however incorporate other modalities. As my main focus is to meet the client’s needs by tailoring my therapeutic interventions specifically to benefit the client. I value working relationally with individuals, understanding the dynamics between myself and the client, gaining insight into their world beyond the therapy space, and going at their necessary pace, to encourage growth, empowerment, and strategies towards psychological wellbeing and self-acceptance.

Life is a life long journey of learning, a quest, a rites of passage. It takes courage to grow up and develop a better version of yourself, to create your own inner peace and a sense of well-being.

“Our wounds are often the openings into the best and most beautiful part of us” – David Richo. This is one of my favoured quotes because it is a reminder that pain and suffering are real but so is the potential for healing and self-discovery. Emotional pain can be intense and can have a detrimental impact on your mental wellbeing, physical well-being, relationships and many other areas of your life. It most profoundly impacts your relationship with yourself.

The world is changing. We all have pivotal moments in our lives as part of our changing world. In these moments we are surrounded by an infinite number of possibilities. Most of us strive to live happy and peaceful lives, but pivotal moments are full of mental and emotional issues that can knock us off balance and keep us stuck or in a place of suffering.

Theo works with a broad range of both in- and outpatients, particularly those whom are struggling with emotionally difficult situations, life transitions, and crisis (including trauma or coping too). That being said, if you are someone who thinks they can benefit from someone who helps you become a better you, you're at the right place. Theo is particularly fond of working with adolescents and students going through difficult times, but enjoys working with improving the healthy functioning of all clients.

Counselling involves the supportive role provided by an empathic counsellor who facilitates a process of in depth self examination, awareness and healing in individuals and relationships. I guide this process by exploring deep rooted belief systems that drive behaviour and emotional reactions in everyday life, ultimately facilitating and providing support through the change process. Clients are given a warm and safe environment where they can express themselves openly and at their own pace, without fear of judgement.

I am less focused on the 'label' a person may have acquired over time (such as depressed, stressed, traumatised), but rather help them build a picture of what life is like when they are overcoming their respective challenges, and in that process discover what makes them unique when they are at their best (or on their way to being their best).
I am a Counselling Psychologist situated in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, in close proximity to the areas of Rosebank and Sandton. I enjoy working with individuals, couples and families addressing current challenges with a Solution Focused approach. These challenges may include some more common complaints such as depression and anxiety, or those trying to come to terms with a trauma or bereavement. My approach is focused and therefore short-term in nature. As such long term time commitments is uncommon. I hope this can help people achieve significant change whilst offering them a more cost effective therapeutic approach.

Negative emotions occur when we are stressed.
What has happened? Often when the initial shock wears off we will say, "I am okay now". Thus we underestimate the impact of the frequent traumas and stressors in our lives. Over time these pockets of tears, fears and pain affect our relationships, leaving us in feeling more alone. I am a Clinical Psychologist with a medical and stress related background. My integrated therapeutic focus is on interpersonal relationships and the emotions that can affect them. I work with individuals, couples and/or with the parents of children who are having difficulties.

Life can throw curveballs in our path from time to time, and these transitional periods can cause stress, anxiety, depression, and isolate us from our friends and families. Going through significant events such as exams, starting at university, thinking about getting married, getting divorced, changing jobs, or even moving house or country can bring up all sorts of emotions and struggles. At the end of the day, we all want to be able to navigate all of life's challenges with the least stress possible, feeling grounded and supported and ready to face the day.
