My name is Danica Freimond (pictured on the right with my husband, Sean). I am a registered social worker with a passion to leave people better than I found them. I work from the person-centred approach and place a high value on your innate ability to change and grow. Just because we cannot see a mental health problem, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Mental health should carry the exact same weight as a broken leg; you wouldn't walk around on a broken leg, don't walk around with untreated mental health problems; reach out for help! "The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change" C. R. Rogers

Hi there! I am a Community and Health Psychology graduate and a registered counsellor with the ASCHP. I would like to offer assistance to anyone who may need an opportunity to talk through complex emotions, traumatic experiences, tricky life situations and relationship issues. My name is Mariska van der Meulen and we offer quality counselling at affordable rates. I chose the name Meraki as it really speaks to me about the supportive, non judgmental environment in which healing takes place. It is a Greek word meaning "to do something with soul, creativity or love; to put something of yourself in your work". We are 7 therapists at Meraki and our aim is to create a safe, compassionate and understanding space where we can explore solutions and find new empowering ways of dealing with challenges.

In the more than 30 years of working with people from all walks of life, I know that we all have a need to live a life of meaning and purpose. Our day to day journey is seldom without challenges – emotionally, socially, and spiritually. Each of these challenges have a lesser, or more severe impact on the quality of our life - on the way we feel about ourselves, regarding our relationship with others and our spiritual growth. Although we do not always want to admit it, we all are wounded in some way. I do believe that the best gift you can give yourself in life, is to strive and work towards becoming the person you are meant to

I have a special place in my heart for children, teens and woman, Pre marital counselling and people with anxiety. It is purpose for me as a counsellor to give you a lift to the next filling station or borrow a wheel spanner for you to change the tyre. With your permission we elevate to experts within our network who would benefit you more if deemed necessary. We care. The journey may involve you alone, your partner or the family. I work with individuals who wish to use their innate psychological strengths to enable meaningful growth, empowerment and goal realisation. It is important to me that psychological engagements are meaningful, create positive challenge, and lead to real growth, and personal exploration between sessions. I work with you to understand what is important to you and why, and then create a joint plan of action to help you move from a state of languishing, to one of flourishing. I do not do quick fixes, however, I also do not believe in engaging in more sessions than needed.

Working with trauma presents as a space that can be messy and produce multiple forms of obstacles, but it is through working with some history that may be hurtful and confusing that growth takes place not only for the client but for me as a counsellor. Identifying that the need is to firstly speak and be heard, held in the moment, guided in understanding their current physical and psychological reactions due to their traumas. Goals align around either a physical need or psychological motivation to have better/healthier coping mechanisms. As said in their needs, being heard and held in a space allows for a sense of freedom to let go.

The process of addressing mental health is holistic. The understanding of how the mind and body influences the thoughts and feelings that we have of ourselves and others, is vital. The body is a chemical barrel that enables us to survive everyday life by secreting the necessary hormones and forming neuro pathways, to keep us save. In understanding these coping mechanisms and thought processes, we can prosper our mental health.

Trauma, depression, anxiety, or internal conflict leave you feeling confused, fatigued, numb, unmotivated, & sabotage of self. A sense of self may be lost. Emotional and physical pain affecting a person's quality of life can reinforce unwanted beliefs that control that person's life. E.g. beliefs around self-worth influence relationships and even lead to being in dysfunctional and toxic relationships, feeling very vulnerable and exposed to even more pain. Emotional and physical symptoms can range from feeling not enough, unworthy, undeserving, weight gain, ill health, anxiety, disconnection, depression, GUILT, SHAME and BLAME.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Psychologists listed in the directory are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The majority of General Counsellors featured in the directory align themselves with reputable professional bodies, particularly the Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners. All Registered Counsellors listed must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professionals.
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for general counsellors in South Africa, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Psychologists, counsellors and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in South Africa.
Psychologists have five years training in psychology, have completed an internship over 12 months, and have completed the National Examination of the Professional Board for Psychology. They must be registered with Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Registered Counsellors must have at least four years of study at a university or college, such as the Bachelor of Psychology and have completed the National Examination of the Professional Board for Psychology. General counsellors, such as Supportive Counsellors, Holistic Counsellors, and Wellness Counsellors, registered with the ASCHP must possess at least an NQF Level 4 qualification. Social Workers must possess a Bachelor of Social Work and must have completed an approved internship in the social service sector.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in South Africa could be between R600 and R1,500. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Therapists who are registered with the HPCSA and professional organisations such as PsySSA or the ASCHP are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client, or as required by law, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
