My approach to therapy includes providing psychological support to people, with a consciousness of their contexts and intersections. Areas of practice include psychotherapeutic interventions for depression, anxiety, complex trauma and post-traumatic stress, psychoeducation and trauma debriefing. I also conduct psychological assessments (career, occupational placement, intelligence, aptitude, personality, neuro, and projective assessments). In my work I advocate for inclusivity and access to mental health and rehabilitation services. I have conducted research around the intersections of identity, personality, power and violence.

Jon Pedrosa assists individuals/couples/families with psychological, emotional, and behavioural difficulties and challenges. Psychotherapy is a medium of talk therapy, which facilitates a process of development and personal growth. The mode of therapy practiced is psychodynamic in nature with a humanistic approach. This means that the therapeutic aim is to identify internal conflicts which the patient may be unaware of that manifests and hinders present behaviour. The goal is assisting the patient to gain self-awareness, insight, and an understanding of how past experiences influences present behaviour.

My belief is that every person is strong, resilient, and can make meaning out of their circumstances. However, we all need support and guidance along the way. I value accompanying my clients on their journeys by building genuine and trusting relationships that foster growth, self-exploration, and healing. “Growth occurs when individuals confront problems, struggle to master them, and through that struggle develop new aspects of their skills, capacities, and views about life” – Carl Rogers.

For me, therapy is not only one thing but many different things. I believe that therapy is a sacred space. A space that holds both pain and growth. A learning space, a teaching space. A space where we get to better understand ourselves and a space of freedom. Freedom to experience, express and explore the most vulnerable parts of ourselves free of judgement and instruction. A space that, at times can be challenging but brings with it an opportunity for change. In a world filled with expectations and demands, this is a space of acceptance, where being yourself, just as you are, is good enough.

It is safer for many people to hide who they really are in order not to feel vulnerable to the world and others, it is a way of protecting themselves from being hurt. Despite this, it is still very painful when we are not known or seen by others. We really want to be found, to be understood and to be loved by others.

The teardrop captures the struggle to cope with the pain and emptiness of our lived experience. It also embodies our capacity to be moved – to feel joy, mastery, beauty and love. This statement captures new possibilities for transition, growth, creation and becoming. Therapy is the space that offers a dialogue between your inner states of mind and the world outside of you where conflict and struggle often play out. As you put words to these experiences, you start to see the patterns of your relationship to the world and the people in it. Getting to this place is wonderful as you begin to live the change that you seek.

I help people who are stuck, in their heads or in undigested emotions, or in difficult life circumstances, relationships and families. I teach that the only person you can change is yourself, but when you do, the ripple effect is massive. Be the change you want to see, never mind what trauma has led to your anxiety, depression etc. We're all addicts: we all have devoted habits or coping mechanisms. After a while these harm us. Find another way. I use a Transpersonal approach because it's v effective. This means I remind you you are connected to something greater than yourself, however you define that - and how to employ that daily.

Borderline Personality (BPD) Counsellors

What is the most successful approach to treating borderline personality disorder?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is considered the gold standard of treatment for borderline personality disorder. An evidence-based treatment, it addresses the extreme emotional reactivity, the relationship difficulties, and the acts of self-harm that create so much distress for BPD patients. DBT is a comprehensive program that includes both regular individual psychotherapy sessions and weekly group sessions of skills training.

What happens in treatment of borderline personality disorder?

Treatment typically consists of weekly individual therapy sessions that last an hour and group skill-focused instructional sessions that may last up to two hours. Patients are typically given homework “assignments” in which they are asked to practice in their daily life the skills they acquire in therapy. Patients also keep a diary tracking their emotions and impulses as a way to know which situations are most problematic and to help them gain control over their own behavior. Difficult situations and feelings are typically reviewed in therapy sessions and more constructive solutions found.

What kinds of problems does BPD treatment help with?

DBT was initially developed to dampen the self-destructive impulses of chronically suicidal patients. It is now the treatment of choice for borderline personality disorder, a serious condition marked by extreme emotional reactivity, relationship instability, and self-injurious behaviors. Treatment of BPD helps patients tolerate the flux of emotions without acting on them, often with a specific focus on tolerating negative emotions. DBT addresses the core problems of BPD—fear of abandonment, low self-esteem, and impulsivity.

What is the goal of treatment in borderline personality disorder?

The goal of treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) is to relieve the extreme emotional distress that patients experience—to curb their emotional reactivity, to minimize their inclination to self-harm, and to reduce their impulsivity. Toward these ends, patients are not only taught an array of new coping skills and techniques for emotional regulation, they are given opportunities to practice them. Another major goal of treatment is interpersonal effectiveness; patients learn and problem-solve ways to effectively communicate in relationships, especially how to ask for what they need as a way to minimize hurt feelings.
