June 3 marks Global Running Day and this year runners are asked to Run 1 Tag 1 to play a game of virtual motivational tag. The movement asks participants to run a mile for someone who inspires them and then tag a friend to do the same. (Tag using #Run1Tag1 and #GlobalRunningDay.)

The running community has inspired millions across the globe through events like Dare2Tri’s paratriathlon training camp, Didi Hirsch’s Alive and Running, Back on My Feet’s Workforce Development, and Abbott’s World Majors. In a time of social distancing, runners can feel a sense of community through New York Road Runners 1M run, an example of NYRR's ongoing virtual running programs.

Some people feel intimidated to try organized running events but movies like Brittany Runs a Marathon provide relatable stories for new runners and a realistic perspective of how to begin an exercise program. (Make sure you have your physician's clearance before beginning an exercise program.) People run for many different reasons. A simple internet search of “why I run” will provide over 2 million hits. Many of these include motivational stories, running for others, running for self, running for charity, and running to achieve physical and psychological goals.

To play virtual tag this Global Running Day, think of someone who inspires you and dedicate your mile to that person. Tag a friend (or several) and ask them to do the same. This motivation can help people share gratitude with each other in a unique, fun, and healthy way.
