Hope In The Guatemalan Highlands

How wonderful it is to be inspired by selfless and dedicated young people

This Wednesday I returned from a week and a half in Guatemala doing medical volunteer work with a group from Iaomai Medical Ministries and HELPS International. We set up a hospital with outpatient clinics and operating rooms on a military base in Huehuetenango (6 hours northeast of Guatemala City), saw over one thousand patients in clinic and performed more than one hundred forty surgeries during our time there.

Guatemala is a stunningly beautiful country and its people are magnificent. Everyone in our group worked hard, without exception. And yet, I was most impressed by the selflessness and dedication of the younger volunteers on our group: American and Canadian nurses and helpers, as well as the teenage translators from Guatemala and El Salvador who enabled us to successfully accomplish exactly what it was that we came to do. All paid their way to come along and help out, and all burned with the desire to give of themselves and to do whatever they could to assist others. If these people represent the future of humanity, and there is every reason to believe that they do, there are good reasons to think that the world will indeed become a better place someday.
