Benefits of Medication-Assisted Treatment
Medication-assisted treatment, which is commonly referred to as MAT, is a dynamic approach to opioid addiction treatment for adults. MAT incorporates prescription medications to help people stop using opioids and therapy to help them build a foundation for lifelong recovery. The medications that are authorized for use in MAT programs in the U.S. have been closely studied for several years, and they have documented histories of safety and effectiveness. These medications can ease the cravings and other distressing symptoms of opioid withdrawal, which can make it easier for people to end their opioid use. However, medication alone cannot address the behavioral, psychological, and social aspects of opioid addiction and recovery. This is why counseling is such an integral part of the MAT experience. During counseling sessions, adults can identify the events and circumstances that may threaten to undermine their recovery. They can also develop skills in important areas such as conflict resolution and stress management. These new capabilities can empower them to respond to difficult situations in a healthier manner without resorting to opioid abuse or other self-defeating behaviors. What to Expect
If you have never participated in MAT for opioid addiction before, it is completely understandable to have questions about what you can expect from this approach, as well as what you may be required to do during treatment. We always want you to have the answers you need so that you can play an active and informed role in all aspects of your care. The first time you arrive at our center, you will be greeted by a staff member who may confirm some basic information with you. After this, you will complete a thorough intake assessment, which will include a physical examination with a doctor. The doctor who conducts your exam will write you a prescription for methadone, buprenorphine, or Suboxone. They will also explain the features of the medication they prescribe and answer any questions you have. During this same visit, we may also schedule your first counseling sessions. While you are enrolled in our MAT program, you will have the opportunity to take part in individual and group counseling sessions. In addition to providing you with valuable information and guidance, counseling can introduce you to the power of sharing support with other members of the recovery community. Our Comprehensive Treatment Center
Lowell Comprehensive Treatment Center (CTC) is located in historic Lowell, Massachusetts. Our center is easily accessible from communities throughout Middlesex and Essex counties via U.S. Route 3 (the Northwest Expressway). We provide medication-assisted treatment on an outpatient basis for adults age 18 and older of all genders who have developed addictions to heroin, fentanyl, prescription painkillers, and other opioids. Treatment at our CTC is provided by a team of skilled and dedicated professionals, including counselors, nurses, and doctors. Our caregivers work closely with each patient to help them determine what a successful life in recovery looks like to them. Then we provide the focused services that can help them achieve the healthier future they have envisioned for themselves. We know that untreated addiction is often accompanied by shame, guilt, and diminished self-esteem, so we also make a concerted effort to remind every patient that they are a valuable individual who is worthy of respect. We celebrate the strength and hope demonstrated by each person who chooses to begin MAT for opioid addiction, and we are proud to help them find the path to recovery.
