Benefits of Medication-Assisted Treatment
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based approach that offers a path to recovery for adults whose lives have been disrupted by addictions to heroin, morphine, prescription painkillers, and other opioids. The two main components of MAT are prescription medication and therapy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved several medications for use in authorized MAT programs. These medications, which can ease many of the symptoms of opioid withdrawal, have proved to be safe when taken on either a short- or long-term basis. When a person takes one of these medications as directed by a doctor, they may find it easier to end their opioid use. Of course, medication alone cannot address the social, psychological, and behavioral aspects of opioid addiction and recovery. This is why counseling is such an important part of MAT. During counseling sessions, adults can gain valuable information about the disease of addiction. They can also identify the concerns or circumstances that may have caused them to begin abusing opioids. Counseling can then help them learn how to respond to these triggers in a healthier manner without resorting to opioid abuse. What to Expect
Entering a MAT program for help with opioid addiction can be a significant first step toward a much healthier and more hopeful future. It can also be a challenging decision and a nerve-wracking experience. At our center, we understand that change can be difficult, even when you know that the change will have a positive impact on your life. To help dispel any concerns you may be having, we are happy to provide you with a description of what happens when you receive care at our center. One of your first activities with us will be to complete an intake assessment. This process may include answering some questions about your health, treatment history, and prior opioid abuse. It will also involve a physical examination with one of our doctors. After your assessment, you may receive a prescription for either methadone or Suboxone to help you stop using opioids. The doctor who writes your prescription will be able to answer any questions you have about the medication. During your first day with us, we may also schedule your initial counseling sessions. We provide individual and group counseling to help you establish a solid foundation for long-term recovery from an opioid addiction. Our Comprehensive Treatment Center
Lawrence Comprehensive Treatment Center (CTC) is located in Lawrence, Massachusetts, near the banks of the Merrimack River and just a few miles from the border with New Hampshire. Our center is easily accessible from communities throughout Essex and Middlesex counties, as well as southeastern New Hampshire, via state Route 28. Adults who receive MAT for opioid addictions at our center are cared for by a team that includes doctors, nurses, counselors, and other dedicated staff members. We never define any patient by the disorder they have developed, nor do we judge them on the basis of the decisions they made or the actions they took while they were living with an untreated opioid addiction. The members of our treatment team work closely with each person to help them establish realistic goals. We then provide the focused services that will help our patients achieve their objectives, attain recovery from opioid addiction, and experience improved quality of life. In addition to providing superior patient care, these skilled and compassionate professionals work diligently to ensure that our CTC remains a safe and welcoming place where all people are treated in a respectful manner.
