At Evolve Mount Helix, we provide the highest caliber of evidence-based residential treatment for adolescents ages 12-17 struggling with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, self-harming or high-risk behaviors, suicidality, aggression, defiance, trauma, and other emotional/behavioral issues. Our primary modes of treatment are Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), integrated with Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Behavioral Activation, and other data-driven modalities. We believe treatment works best when it is individually tailored. Our clinical staff conducts a comprehensive evaluation of each teen pre- and post-admission in order to develop a highly detailed treatment plan that considers their individual history and symptoms. Our robust clinical program includes individual and family therapy, psychiatry, academic support, and daily groups (on DBT Skills Training, Anger Management, Relapse Prevention, and Seeking Safety). Teens also participate in experiential therapies: equine-assisted therapy, music, art, fitness, yoga, and more. We also offer 12-Step/ SMART Recovery programs for those struggling with dual diagnoses or addiction.

At Evolve, teens receive individual/family therapy at least five times a week, psychiatric evaluations weekly, and daily group sessions on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills, Anger Management, Relapse Prevention, and Seeking Safety.
Evolve offers premier mental health, substance use, and dual diagnosis treatment for children and teens ages 12-17 struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, self-harming/high-risk behaviors, substance use, dual diagnosis, suicidality, ADHD, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder, and other emotional/behavioral issues. At Evolve, we cater exclusively to children and adolescents. Our treatment team (which includes a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, licensed therapists, on-site nurses, counselors and 24-hour support staff) focus on what we do best: creating a safe, supportive, warm home environment for teens to stabilize and learn practical ways to improve their emotional health. It’s research-proven that kids and teens have specific clinical needs that differ from other age groups. A specialty program like ours can be a safer experience and promote better recovery for your child than other programs which also include adults. Our high staff-client ratio, deliberately small groups (we only serve up to six teens at any given time), and licensed, experienced clinical team allow us to provide the highest caliber of personalized, evidence-based care.

DBT separates skills training from individual DBT therapy, requiring participants to attend weekly skills training groups in addition to being in ongoing and weekly DBT therapy.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) was initially developed by Marsha Linehan in the early 1990’s to help clients that were suicidal or intentionally self-injuring. However, it has been shown to be effective with other impulse control disorders including substance abuse. This is a strength based, skills building program. We teach 4 sets of skills in a 25 week model, Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance. We have a program for teens and adults in three locations, Auburn, Davis and Folsom.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Treatment Centers

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
