Akua Strong Facility at Long Beach offers outpatient dual-diagnosis treatment for adults suffering from substance use and mental health disorders. We provide IOP & PHP programs that include many treatment modalities, such as psychotherapy approaches, medications, and holistic approaches such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness therapies. Evidence-based treatment for dual-diagnosis disorders includes drugs or psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, or a combination. Medications are prescribed for specific conditions evaluated by our medical director: whereas psychotherapy, in one form or another, can be used for mental health disorders. We specialize in teens battling depression, anxiety, trauma, emotion dysregulation, high-risk/self-harm behaviors, substance use, dual diagnosis, ADHD, addiction, and/or suicidal ideation. Evolve treats teens—and teens only. Our treatment approach emphasizes Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, along with other evidence-based modalities such as Seeking Safety, Relapse Prevention, Behavioral Activation, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy and 12-Step support programs. Our robust residential program includes one-on-one therapy, family therapy (with out-of-state families joining remotely), group therapy, psychiatry, and 24/7 skills-coaching. Teens also participate in experiential therapies proven to support recovery (e.g. equine, art, surf, drama, music, fitness, cooking, yoga, kickboxing, etc.) as well as daily academic support to keep them on track with school. We also offer gender affirming treatment for LGBTQ+ and transgender youth.
Insurance covers up to 100 percent of the treatment and therapeutic modalities that Newport Academy offers for teens ages 12-17. We accept all major insurance providers and work collaboratively with payers to optimize coverage for families. Many adolescents who receive treatment from Newport Academy using insurance coverage do so through a Single Case Agreement, a special contract through which out-of-network providers can work with a family’s insurance company on an In-Network basis. Newport Academy maintains a full-time, in-house team dedicated to supporting families through the mental health insurance coverage and financing process. In order to secure sufficient insurance coverage, we will most likely need to conduct a series of clinical reviews and any requested doctor-to-doctor calls with the insurance company. While other facilities may charge for this service, we feel it is our responsibility to assist families with what can be a complex process. Our goal is to ensure that families receive the maximum coverage, so they can access the highest-quality treatment.

These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
