The DOT-SAP RTD (Return-to-Duty) process is designed for employees who violate the Department of Transportation’s drug and alcohol testing rules. It ensures they are illegible to return to safety-sensitive duties, such as operating commercial vehicles. After a positive drug or alcohol test, or refusal to test, the employee meets with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). The SAP evaluates them and prescribes a treatment plan recommendation, which may include education, counseling, or rehabilitation. Once the employee completes the recommendation, they undergo a follow-up evaluation with the SAP. If compliant, the employee's employer sends him/her for a return-to-duty test, which the employee must pass to resume work. The employee is then subject to follow-up testing for 12 to 60 months.
