My favorite quote is from child psychologist Winnicott, "It is a joy to be hidden and a disaster not to be found." This quote refers to the game hide and seek, we get the feelings of thrill and security when knowing we are in no way to be seen. But at the end of the game when no one finds us and everybody goes home, we get a tremendous sense of disappointment and isolation. We all have to hide at some point, whether it is avoiding, masking, dissociating, or distracting (by giving, pleasing, etc.). However, when hiding starts to feel like the only way to feel safe, we also lose connection to the part of self that enjoys being seen.
Many of us grew up in an environment where we were only allowed to be seen when we were "good," and punished otherwise. I try my best to offer a space where my clients feel safe whether they want to hide or be seen. This is a space where suggestions and guidance come last, but feelings and a true sense of self come first, even if they feel bad or undesired.
Everyone deserves a space like this. I take pride in building my experience working with marginalized groups. I primarily work with the LGBTQ+ community, POC and immigrants, sex workers, and poverty, all of which overlap greatly with generational trauma. I’m here to hold this space, and we can work together for you to feel safe, be seen, and grow.
