Almost all of us fear our anger, but a nearly equal portion fear our love. This is a problem, since almost no one teaches us how to work with these forces or even what they are (let alone how they relate to each other as both separable and intermingling phenomena). Insofar as we fail to understand these basic facts, we remain fragmented and alienated from our own nature. We all love and hate, often in equal measure, by nature.
The goal of psychotherapy is not, therefore, to banish one of these aspects in favor of the other, but to integrate them in some whole and balanced way into something that looks and feels a lot like being human, which is a thing we're all trying to remember. I don't claim to have the answers, but I do know this. We need this work, now more than ever.
