I have an eclectic practice in which I pull from a number of different techniques and theories, including brain spotting, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, play therapy, gestalt therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Counseling is a journey and admitting that you need help is one of the hardest and most rewarding things you will do. This is an active journey that we will take together. Often we feel that activity and movement will help us to feel better, but underneath that unrest is a range of psychological processes such as depression, overwhelming stress, perfectionism, and anxiety. Choosing to ignore your issues tends to make life more difficult and places a strain on your relationships. Through our counseling relationship we will create goals, set the pace and find your path of healing.

Have you ever felt hopeless, anxious, or worried? Have you tried to get help and found it did not work? Then I am the therapist for you! I have years of experience. I especially enjoy helping families resolve conflict by figuring out what leads to it and working together. I am capable to do so, sometimes in as few as a couple sessions. I love working with young children. I have successfully used EMDR for stress and anxiety about health procedures.

Admitting you need help is not an easy or fun place to me, so let's make it a little easier. I know a little bit about addiction, grief and family stuff. Are you finding yourself drowning in video games or shopping or alcohol? Have you lost someone recently, have you lost a job or a house or feel like you have lost everything? Is your relationship struggling, is your rough to deal with, or maybe you realize your family just wasn't like other families. These are all things we can talk about, work on healing and find a way forward with and from.

Hello! Taking the first step into therapy can be difficult and finding a therapist you are comfortable with is vital for the therapeutic process. Life is not fair. Many of us have learned this in very difficult or traumatic ways. Many of us bear the wounds and scars of broken marriages, families, or abuse; feel overwhelmed and alone; believe we are unloved or rejected; have thoughts we can not control; or can not seem to stop behaviors we know hurt us and those we love. We also know deep down this is not how it is supposed to be. Life is meant to be lived with abundant joy, peace, deep and fulfilling relationships, and acceptance and celebration of who we were created to be. Those who seek help through therapy are the most courageous people I know.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
