Life is both wonderful and complicated. Situations in life may become too much for us to handle. You don’t have to do it on your own. I partner with clients to work through these overwhelming times. My role in the therapeutic relationship is to be curious and nonjudgmental in order to facilitate conversations that open up choices to improve your life.

There are times when life feels more significant and almost bigger than us. This experience can be wonderful when filled with love, gratitude, & connection. However, the pendulum swings both ways, and sometimes, we can feel overwhelmed, helpless, and angry. Most of us struggle to know what our needs are, let alone how to meet them. Counseling is an avenue that creates a space to get to know yourself and your needs and learn how to make the incremental life adjustments to meet them. I can help you learn how to deal with hard things and cultivate a more satisfying and fulfilling life.

I do not focus on any one specific population to serve. I believe that everyone needs someone to talk to and process what they are experiencing in their lives. In general I realize that most people I serve are working on rebuilding, repairing, and relearning how to manage connections to others.

Having a witness to our lives is powerful medicine. You are here because you're looking for someone to hold space while you explore your life's challenges. A space and person that will enable you to grow and heal. You are your greatest healer and I am here to show you how therapy is a fantastic place to cultivate your path to personal growth, improved mental health, and overall well-being. Art therapy offers a unique and effective approach to healing and self-discovery. You do not need artistic skills to benefit from therapy incorporating art. “A simple line painted with the brush can lead to freedom and happiness.” – Joan Miró

I have experience working in a variety of specialized areas, including mindfulness, DBT, depression and anxiety, women's issues, trauma, substance abuse and addiction, workplace stress, divorce and perinatal mood disorders.
Usually, when we're facing challenges that feel overwhelming, we crave understanding and acceptance...someone who will listen, provide support and stand side by side with us as we navigate our way through murky waters. We also long for relief from whatever is causing us pain - from harmful behaviors or confusing situations to emotions or thoughts that feel out of control. We want to feel better and to be free - free to take pleasure in the joys and triumphs of our lives and free to live our lives with the confidence that we have the tools and resources to cope with whatever pain may appear.

I offer a different type of treatment model. But, before we get to that, let’s start here. Hello, my name is Alexandra. I am a licensed psychologist specializing in the assessment and treatment of adults with addiction (chemical and sexual), anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and trauma. In the throes of addiction or turmoil of a personality disorder, you need support both in and outside of the session. If you find yourself feeling paralyzed with anxiety, immobilized with depression, or helpless over your body’s response to trauma . . . you need specialized care. I designed this practice with you in mind.

I wonder if as you attempt to find a therapist, the blur of similar messages to you about what therapy means to me and what kinds of therapy I do, will simply put you to sleep. Congratulations! You have found a slightly less boring presentation on what I do. Very simply, I help people get better. Depression, fear, fighting with the people important to you, estrangement, sadness, fed up with the life you currently have. You can change it. I listen. I try to find out what is specifically important to you and help you change what is not working. That's it. Listen to Gabor Mate to get a little of a sense of what I believe.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
