I grew up with curiosity and befuddlement in equal measures. Only in college did I begin to trust in my ability to think and pursue a path that led to graduate work and training as an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker). Those training experiences included service as a hospital chaplain and the personal oceans of grief and loss. As an intern at a Veterans Administration's behavioral health clinic, and how war and chronic mental illness crossed paths daily to challenge patients, already isolated, even in their own families.
My post-MSW career began at a state mental hospital, before transitioning to a clinical associate in the department of psychiatry at Duke, where I introduced medical students and psychiatric interns to group and family work for patients in significant emotional crisis.
As a group therapist and in private practice, I have witnessed and welcomed the risk to accept personal chaos and assistance as a step towards the integration of joy and increased confidence. I'm convinced therapy, with studied guidance, can offer verifiable growth.
