I am passionate about helping adolescents and adults who are experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, stress, relationship issues, life transitions, and identity exploration. I use techniques from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), multicultural therapy, and strength-based therapy. I strive to understand clients within the larger context of their lives, not simply by their mental health symptoms. I take on a multicultural perspective when working with clients, and I am committed to utilizing culturally sensitive assessments and treatment plans.

In life we are faced with many challenges. Sometimes this happens when it is least expected. This can lead to hopelessness, doubt, worry, sadness, anger, and many other unwanted feelings and emotions. Finding the right support through these difficult times is an important first step. I specialize in working with clients who struggle with anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, stress management, anger management, and relationship and family issues.

If you feel down, stuck, or don't know how to move forward, it can help to find professional support—someone in your corner, to help you get your bearings again and find your way through the tough times. As a solution-focused and strengths-based therapist, I work with clients to understand their past, clarify their present, and support their goals moving forward, even through life’s hardest situations. I work with clients experiencing the effects of trauma using EMDR and mindfulness, targeting and reworking core beliefs to move individuals and couples forward in their relationships with themselves and others.

You’re the one people go to for support because you seem like you have it all together. Underneath, however, is a different story. You’re barely hanging on. Everyday stressors are overwhelming you. Feeling depressed, hopeless, and anxious are your new norms. You may feel uncomfortable in your own skin and use substances or restrictions as a way to cope. You may feel fearful and stuck because of a traumatic experience. Humans are naturally resilient, but in an attempt to adapt we can fall into unhealthy cycles that keep us from realizing our potential.

I view psychotherapy as a powerful tool for breaking out of confusion and pain. I work with people seeking help with depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, performance, life transitions, job problems, relationship issues, loneliness, and unhappiness. I actively and compassionately work with individuals (adults and adolescents) to help them regain a sense of hope, meaning, and connection in their lives, improving their coping skills and to manage daily stress and overcome destructive behaviors. As a therapist, I work with people to create the lives they want, allowing them to interact more successfully in their families, relationships, and the broader community.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
