We all seek a life that is fulfilling and meaningful, but sometimes during our life's journey, we can come to feel disconnected from that source of meaning. Perhaps the stress and responsibilities of life become overwhelming, and what is meaningful gets lost in the busyness. Maybe a life event occurs ( trauma/illness/death/divorce/etc.) that causes us to reevaluate everything we thought to be true. Maybe our relationships or our roles in life begin to shift making us question "What now?" My honor as a therapist is to walk with you as you rekindle that connection and create a life that intentionally honors what matters most to you.

Additional client populations that I hold experience; depression, low self esteem, and trauma.
When we take the time to nourish our soul, we increase our emotional resilience and promote overall healing which helps us through life’s many obstacles and increases our quality of life. However, often there are inside forces and outside forces that hinder nurturing our soul and this is what I support my clients with. I understand the healing process requires a leap of faith and that taking the necessary steps can be dialectically exciting and daunting. This is why I strive to embrace my clients with curiosity, empathy, and authenticity while also challenging them to take their next steps towards meaningful change.

In addition, Melissa received a certificate of completion in trauma counseling.
Melissa believes that a person is more than what brings them into therapy. An individual has various interests, needs, intersecting identities, early experiences, and goals. Therefore, Melissa values the therapeutic relationship, establishing a relationship built in collaboration and trust, so that the client has a safe space to explore their narratives, their values, and wellness. Melissa mainly pulls from humanistic and cognitive behavioral approaches, offering a space of non judgment as one examines thoughts, behaviors, and feelings; however, Melissa aims to meet the client where they are at in their wellness journey.

When you feel validated and assured by those around you, we start to feel heard, wanted, and motivated. You feel a sense of urgency to start working through the challenges life is throwing your way; wondering the best way to go about this. This is where we work together to identify what is causing these concerns to continue occurring, the underlying meaning, and develop a newfound perspective on your life. Those who choose to attend therapy show a strength by allowing yourself to be vulnerable and having awareness of change needed to happen. This is why I strive to be empathic, genuine, and create a welcoming environment for all.

My areas of interest include working with depression, anxiety, mood disorders, substance abuse, trauma/abuse, parent/child communication issues, behavioral problems, and spiritual issues.
My passion is working with children, adolescents, adults, and couples to meet the challenges they may be experiencing such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, anger management, addiction, self-esteem issues or perhaps spiritual emptiness. One of my goals is to shed light on the issues that you are currently experiencing, noticing the internal roots of conflict, and finding ways to make meaningful and purposeful shifts in your life. My treatment approach is integrative, and following an assessment of the individual needs of my client determines which modalities I utilize.

I use a wholistic, trauma-informed, integrative approach to therapy, tailored to the unique needs of each individual.
Has shame kept you in silence? Have circumstances robbed you of your peace? Are you struggling to cope with the stressors in your life? Do you feel like no one understands you or that you don’t fit in? Do you feel alone, overwhelmed, hopeless, angry, worthless, anxious, in constant pain, or out of control? Have you been hurt by people or systems that are supposed to help you? Trauma can shake the very foundation of our sense of well-being, safety, and belonging. And shame can hinder us from living the life we want and deserve. Whatever you find yourself struggling with, you don't need to suffer in silence or walk this journey alone.

If a client has experienced difficult periods in their life such as loss, trauma or abuse it is very important that therapy is approached in a manner that builds trust, is presented with empathy and builds rapport.
My ideal client is a person who understands that events in life can be difficult to bear alone. Looking for and acquiring help in life is part of the human experience. I think that motivation to seek help can lead a client to visualize new perspectives on life, unknown to them before the therapeutic alliance begins . I think that as the client enters this experience they will greatly benefit themselves through new insights and horizons that improve their lives, health and relationships

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
