My approach is both collaborative and engaging working 'with' you and not just silently observing. Having worked with a wide range of clients from diverse backgrounds, I've learned to customize my approach to best meet 'your' needs and not force you to fit a predetermined modality.

These include mindfulness, using one's values to guide change, fostering compassion for oneself, and exploring existential themes.
The core of my work is creating a safe space where clients can feel heard, respected, and understood. A full and satisfying life is unique to each person; I will collaborate with you as you move toward the life you want to live. Understanding each client's culture, identities, and worldview is central to my approach. Not only is it important to deeply understand you as an individual, but also to explore how factors in the wider environment either promote your well being or intensify your distress. A holistic approach to wellness involves the individual, their relationships, and their wider world.

I utilize an existential-humanistic approach which goes above symptom reduction and helps with understanding and developing new ways to experience self, others, and the world. This approach encourages introspection, self-reflection, and assists an individual with increasing self-awareness, self-knowledge, and opportunities for choice where they once felt frustrated, stuck, and hopeless. In addition, I specialize in cross-cultural issues, historical and cultural trauma, and acculturation/racial diversity.

I use an integrated approach, drawing primarily from Adlerian, feminist, & existential theories, to assist clients in finding meaning, adapting to change, and developing a sense of recovery.
I am well-equipped to work with individuals who are choosing therapy to better understand their experiences or work toward behavioral change & symptom management. As a clinical rehabilitation counselor, I specialize in working with people who identify as having a disability or who are recovering from a major health or role change. Specifically, I have extensive experience working with women, LGBTQ+ individuals, veterans, people who are involved in the justice system, & people with a TBI. I have worked for over five years as a substance use counselor, and can provide support for goals from harm reduction to abstinence.

My background is existential-humanistic, psychodynamic, and feminist.
Perhaps you and your partner want to explore consensual non-monogamy/polyamory or are fully entrenched in it, and you’re curious about how to navigate some choppy waters. Maybe you are a person dealing with the fall-out from divorce or a break-up, or you’re a couple struggling to “speak each other’s language” and be vulnerable. Maybe there's the nagging question of "Is what I'm experiencing really abuse?" Uncovering and processing psychological or emotional trauma is necessary in order to fully understand how and why you show up in your life. Maybe you're feeling shame about your sexuality and want to find empowerment...

My approach incorporates IFS, somatic, psychodynamic, existential and person centered methods.
It takes courage to seek help when you are suffering. Taking steps to improve the quality of your life is one of the most valuable gifts you can give yourself. I believe it is the job of a therapist to help people on their journey and that the therapeutic relationship is an essential part of this process. The therapist must create an environment of trust where it feels safe to explore thoughts and feelings in a non-judgmental, supportive manner. In this kind of atmosphere, we can begin the work to identify strengths and diminish self-defeating thinking and behavior so that you can move forward with your life.

After 17 years in the industry I have fine tuned my approach to connect with individuals who have been previously unsuccessful with therapy in the past or are looking to do more in depth targeted work. Most do well with basic coping skills and typical positive encouragement, and there are many therapists offing that approach. The specific therapy methods I employ are focused on understanding and changing core issues rather than just managing behaviors. We will travel together to examine hard truths with the goal of creating long term fundamental changes from an existential perspective.

My primary approach to therapy is Existential, meaning that I believe my clients will be best helped by focusing on confronting the uncertainties and conflicts inherent in life.
Hello! My name is Nicholas Steeves, and I am an intern at Lighthouse Counseling. I am particularly passionate about working with clients experiencing Grief, Bereavement, and Death and Dying issues. I am transitioning from a career as a Paramedic, and found that these issues really speak to my strengths. I am also interested in working with clients seeking treatment for anxiety, depression, adjustment, men’s issues, substance abuse, trauma, and couples counseling. I have just begun my journey in the field of mental health, but I am passionate and excited to support my clients in their pursuit of healing, wellness, and growth.

I am primarily an existential-humanistic therapist.
I am passionate about helping those who are introspective, emotionally-inclined, and curious. I care about helping clients move beyond the surface in therapy to reach a deeper level of truth that they haven't yet spoken. Too often, therapy glosses over the fact that, at times, life is painful and messy. As much as we might want to avoid this, I strive to remind clients that we are better off trying to embrace this, and we might be surprised by what comes from doing so.

Her therapeutic perspective is grounded in an existential-humanistic orientation for individual or group therapies.
Dr. Lori creates a warm, supportive, and judgment-free space for a person to include all aspects of their lives. Openness within the therapeutic relationship helps the person reflect on struggles related to current or past experiences involving physical, emotional, or spiritual challenges or traumas. Through curiosity, inquiry, and validation, the person draws on their personal strengths, and the safe, caring therapeutic relationship, to bring about healing in a calm and welcoming office or on a HIPAA compliant virtual platform.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
