I understand that taking the first step in seeking services can often be the most difficult. I want to start by saying welcome and that I am glad you are here! My name is Melanie Borland and I am a Professional Counseling Intern who works primarily with adolescents, teens, young adults, families and couples. I base my work within a holistic approach that acknowledges the psychological, social, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of one's whole-self. I am dedicated to helping my clients achieve positive changes in their lives. Offering a friendly, positive and humorous outlook, together we will build the skills needed to manage everyday problems to more chronic mental illness. I specialize in empowering my clients to work toward achievable goals. My belief is that there are too many people in the world who will point out when you are "doing things wrong", I am not that person...I will positively reframe the negative and point out the positive.

At the center of any therapy, I believe it is a collaboration between therapist and client so you will be comfortable and aware throughout your journey, without ever feeling like strings are being pulled in the background. I provide psychoeducation to clients and together we strategize realistic goals to meet each individual’s needs. I have worked with individuals and groups utilizing various treatment approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing, among others. I feel a synthesis of approaches helps a broader range of concerns.

I like to think I'm not the typical shrink and am often told, "You're not what I expected." That's a good thing. I'm sarcastic, will probably talk about smoking meats at some point, and love my Detroit Lions. As the owner of Thin Line Psychological Services, I work primarily with public safety employees. If that is you, then you already know the job takes a toll. Many clients contact me because they either see changes in themselves or changes have been pointed out by loved ones and they want to address them before things get worse. I work with a lot of clients dealing with burnout and feeling "flat" or unemotional when off duty.

Marriage therapy; Parenting concerns; Counseling for pastors; Fertility and adoption issues; Spiritual concerns, doubts and questions; Men's issues around communication, emotional health/intelligence, pornography and other addictive or problematic sexual issues; Grief and loss; anxiety; depression; addiction issues.
It's hard for most people to ask for help. I get that. But I am of the belief that there are two categories of people: those who could be helped by therapy and those who actually go out and try it. So, if you are stepping out, asking for help, and giving therapy a try - good for you for taking a risk. My goal right off the bat is to build trust with my clients. Regardless of the issue at hand, I believe the most important and powerful tool is to have a trusted relationship in your corner.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
