My ideal client is someone whom is struggling in life and motivated to seek help and make the changes necessary in their thoughts, beliefs or circumstances to get back into wellness. I enjoy working with teens. Most of my career has been with at risk youth. I also work with women's issues, addressing underlying causes of stress and overwhelm. I use Imago and Gottman approaches with couples. When working with men, we discuss the need for vulnerability and self-acceptance. Anxiety, depression, stress, grief and loss can all be successfully addressed with psychotherapy.

I specialize in utilizing cognitive strategies, motivational strategies, and mindfulness techniques based in neuroscience to change thinking patterns and habits, stress and anxiety reactions, and behavioral symptoms. These techniques have research and history behind them that prove they work. My training allows me to teach and use techniques to help clients actually change their brains and nervous systems for better mental and physical health. My techniques are less about talk therapy and more about creating actions and practices that work toward change and the creation of a happy, healthy life!

I also follow positive psychology principles: we should strive not just for the absence of problems or distress, but an improved sense of well-being, satisfaction, and happiness.
I firmly believe in the possibility and power of personal change. And having a little support or guidance along the way!  Therapy can be as simple as having an hour to talk about you with a good listener.  It can also mean digging deep into family issues, attachment patterns, and current interpersonal relationships.  Perhaps you want to learn strategies for reducing anxiety.  Or discover why that co-worker brings out so much stress and what to do about it… I first like to learn about your goals - what are you hiring me for?  Then we’ll develop a plan to work together toward them.

Sacred Psychotherapy is the name of my practice. The therapy I offer blends my fifty years of both psychological and spiritual training. Psychologically, we each have a unique personality. As infants, the thing we need most, besides sustenance, is love. If we receive loving input, we can learn to love ourselves. If we are treated harshly, we can learn to dislike ourselves. Spiritually, we each also have a unique soul. My therapy with you can address questions like: What is the meaning of my life? and How do I rise rather than fall when things get hard? I see psychotherapy as a joint journey of the two of us.

I see psychotherapy as a collaborative and exploratory process, in which your specific goals, needs, and wishes will determine the focus of our work and I will help you navigate through the impasses, challenges, and complexity that inevitably confront us as human beings. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to addressing mental health or for righting the ‘ship – our relationship to self and others in our life. That is why I tailor treatment to address the deeply personal concerns you are contending with. I have experience in psychodynamic, relational, CBT, and ACT. Oftentimes, a combination or integration of approaches works best.

You feel burdened, like you’re carrying a refrigerator on your back through a land mine- almost anything or anyone could set you off. You hoped Life would be more peaceful, but as time goes on, your anxiety remains deep. Stress plants itself in your bones and reverberates through your whole body. It’s the same, no matter what you try. The voice of failure reverberates in your head. “You won’t make it, so why even try?” It all feels so hopeless.

Are you struggling with prioritizing yourself without feeling guilty? Do you put yourself last on you feel like you are constantly prioritizing the needs of others over your own? You don’t recognize the women you see in the mirror and you wonder how this has happened. Have you lost sight of your goals, desires and personality? Your mood frequently fluctuates and you just can’t seem to keep it stable? You’ve read self help books, watched Tiktoks and talked to your friends yet you haven’t been able to shake the feelings you have. Relationships with peers, family and partners are overwhelming and at times you just want to run away.

* You can be happy * loving and effective counseling for individuals (adults, youth & children), couples (pre-marital, new parent couples, partnership, marriage, divorce, separation and co-parenting) and families (house calls available). Call to set up a free phone consultation to see if we are a match to help you and/ or your loved ones on a healing path. Fear is the greatest obstacle to healing: fear of pain, fear of being alone, fear of the truth, fear of the mess change would require. The antidote to fear is courage.

Positive Psychology Therapists

How does positive psychology therapy work?

Positive psychology therapy derives from the work of Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania. He and others developed the field of positive psychology building on humanistic theory. Positive psychology therapy is similar to acceptance and commitment therapy, and it essentially quiets emotional distress through positivity, contentment, and well-being. This therapy does not reduce the individual to symptoms and conditions.

When do I know if I need treatment using positive psychology?

If an individual is overwhelmed by emotional distress and general negativity, they may feel trapped. A positive psychology therapist can help them view their emotions and behaviors differently, and approach life with a better understanding of their positive strengths. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from positive psychology therapy?

The patient may be asked to explore their signature strengths. The therapist will also ask the individual to talk about their goals, which should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. Discussing negative experiences and symptoms is important, but so is the exploration of positive experiences. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more positive and fulfilling way. This therapy is proactive and may use forgiveness, gratitude, hope, and compassion to help reframe negativity.

Is positive psychology effective in therapy?

Positive psychology therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with eating disorders benefit from this type of intervention. This therapy encourages the person to reframe their distressed thoughts and move into healthier patterns of functioning. This therapy also aims to move an individual toward what works well in their life. Positive psychology therapy can elicit lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
