To the people struggling with substance use: Sometimes it takes one to know one.
After 17 years in the industry I have fine tuned my approach to connect with individuals who have been previously unsuccessful with therapy in the past or are looking to do more in depth targeted work. Most do well with basic coping skills and typical positive encouragement, and there are many therapists offering that approach. The specific therapy methods I employ are focused on understanding and changing core issues rather than just managing behaviors. We will travel together to examine hard truths with the goal of creating long term fundamental changes from an existential perspective.

I am passionate about working with clients who are impacted by substance use and mood disorders. I believe in taking a holistic approach to counseling. Understanding how the mind and body work together to impact physical and mental health as part of recovery, is a key component of the work I do with clients. As well as, identifying how our thoughts impact our feelings and behaviors. I believe in collaborating with clients on their recovery journey in order to help you discover your best self.

I am drawn to helping individuals & families cope through life transitions, anxiety, substance use, interpersonal conflict, depression, & grief/loss.
Are you struggling with adjusting to change, coping with stress or navigating conflict? As a result, has this left you feeling overwhelmed or anxious? Has shame, guilt or negative self-talk been impacting you? Do you need help creating boundaries with your partner, family, or friends? As a therapist, I believe in the saying, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” My role is to help you explore areas of concern, develop coping skills, and gain insight about yourself. A primary focus of my practice is teaching self-compassion to help fill up your cup when life is feeling too difficult to navigate on your own.

Relationships don't have to wait until they are on their last leg to bring them to couples or family therapy. Feelings of shame often make it difficult to reach out for help. That being said, it's never too late to get into therapy! I invite individuals, couples, and families into a curious and affirming space in navigating life's challenges. Whether it be working to explore patterns of substance use, understand our strong reactions to the behavior of others, making sense of a recent loss, or questioning who we are and our purpose, I'm here to support and empower you to foster growth in achieving your goals.

While my past experience has primarily been with people who have engaged in alcohol and other substance use, teenagers who have difficulty with authority, and members of the community who have experienced stress, depression, and anxiety, I am open to working with people of all backgrounds and conditions.
Hello, I'm Timothy Volbrecht, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. I provide services statewide via telehealth using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Reality Therapy. I became a therapist because I am someone who believes in seeking out your own answers on a journey of self-discovery. I believe that providing a space for people to be able to ask questions and work through their personal experiences and discoveries in a supportive environment can lead to self-actualization. I find fulfillment in knowing that I can help others along in their own journeys.

As a licensed professional counselor, I specialize in humanistic therapy, adjustment disorders, trauma-informed therapy, depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, compulsive/impulsive disorders, anger, self-esteem, inner child struggles, healthy relationships, thinking distortions, and alcohol-related issues (powerlessness).
Why therapy? Why not therapy? What are the areas in your life you would like to improve? Has it been a long time or never since you received validation from work or family? Are you moving towards a transformative place in your life? Do you have trouble saying "no?" Are there people you need to forgive? What part of life has brought you joy? Would you want to experience life differently? Is fear in your way? Have you struggled with shame or guilt? Something or someone has left you grieving? These and other questions can be the source of your discovery. Hello, my name is Terri; let me be your therapist.

My clinical interests include identity development, family and relationship concerns, trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, and substance use.
Sometimes the way you relate to yourself and others no longer aligns with who you truly are, your values or how you envisioned your life. You may feel disconnected from yourself and others. You may feel anxious or misunderstood, and start to question your worth or love. To cope, you wear a mask to hide parts of yourself, which creates feelings of tension within yourself and with others. What if you lived your life according to your values while accepting and expressing your genuine self? I create a judgement free, safe therapeutic space where you can explore, understand and find your authentic self.

I grew up with the detrimental effects of trauma, pain, and substance use in my family and all around me.
Many people with trauma or PTSD also suffer from substance use issues . Feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, grief, depression, loneliness, feeling judged, and misunderstood are very normal. You may not trust the world around you and may not know how to cope with symptoms of trauma alone and will instead seek to numb your emotional turmoil. Both are lonely and isolating issues. Substance use is an outward manifestation of your pain and with supportive trauma and substance use counseling combined, your addiction can be treated as well as the underline symptoms that cause the need to numb your emotions and avoid your reality.

I have years of experience helping others, particularly with chronic health issues, substance use, depression, and anxiety.
Life can be challenging. When life gets tough, it is likely to influence how you feel and how you react. You may feel overwhelmed in a way that makes it difficult to make decisions, take action, or feel motivated. Or you may be overwhelmed with emotions you don't know what to do with. Talking with a therapist you can connect with can help you look at your challenges in a new way and help you move forward to overcome life's difficulties.

I specialize in working with adults who are struggling with symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance use, low self-esteem, life transitions, and stress management.
Making impactful, long-lasting change can be difficult. Draining mental health symptoms, substance use, and trauma can contribute to making positive lasting change feel like an impossible and daunting task. I understand the importance of wanting to find that immediate relief, as well as identifying and treating the root of the problem. An essential part of our work is exploring the past and making connections between the past and present. I enjoy getting to know my clients as individuals, assisting them in their journey of learning about themselves, and helping them learn the skills they need to live a more meaningful life.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
