Has a recent loss turned your life upside down? Losing a loved one can make you feel empty and not like yourself. Family and friends try to help, but statements like "you'll get over it' and "it is time to move on" can be hurtful and insensitive. Coping with loss is a lifetime process that is never completely overcome. Our task to help you find ways to stay connected with their essence rather than find closure. Seeking guidance from a licensed therapist can help you regain life balance at school, home, and work.

Many people have lived through terrible events that continue to haunt them, such as sexual assaults, war, child abuse, suicide, violence, near-death experiences, and more. Now the nightmares won't stop, and the memories keep popping into your head. You're on edge, jumpy, and can't relax. You might feel guilty or ashamed about what happened or how you responded. You may isolate from others, lash out, use drugs or alcohol, or consider suicide to escape it all. You're likely exhausted by all the effort to push it away and keep moving forward. If this sounds like you, you might be suffering from PTSD.

I've worked for over 15 years helping people with ADHD, bipolar disorder, substance dependence, relationship issues, grief, career transitions, rehabilitation and return to work issues, self-harm, women's issues, life transitions and those with serious mental and physical illnesses.
Successful therapy begins with a genuine dialogue between you as a person and me as your therapist. The gentle art of change means discussing the context of your life where you are at now and how you got there (including how you developed and maintain the values you live by). Your values provide the "richness" to living. Most of all, psychotherapy means understanding what you've already tried, what has worked and yes- what gets in the way of you living a better life.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
