Choosing a therapist is a deeply personal decision and I recognize the difficulty it can take to reach out for help. I am a psychologist and work with clients managing anxiety, depression, chronic illness ( pain, cancer), ADHD, and existentialist concerns (values, meaning-making). I also conduct psychodiagnostic evaluations. Outside of my clinical practice, I am a Professor of Psychology at Brooklyn College with a research program focusing on shame, personal values, and well-being.

Human beings are delightfully resilient creatures. People may experience pain, yet be determined to work through and move beyond it. I feel privileged to witness such courage and determination in my clients. I will work collaboratively with you. The expert on you is you! I bring my training, experience, and knowledge of psychological principles and treatments as tools to help you meet your goals. Often a balanced approach is helpful, developing practical strategies as well as identifying underlying issues contributing to your present-day problems. Some clients prefer emphasizing one approach over another; I aim to be responsive to your needs.

I have found hypnosis to be very helpful in successfully treating insomnia, weight loss, smoking cessation, test anxiety, chronic and injury-related pain, relaxation and anxiety reduction (fear of flying).
I love my work: helping individuals and couples solve problems, grow and flourish. We grow by learning mastery; to me this means being competent in dealing with yourself and the outside world. I help clients do this by gaining self-knowledge and learning the skills necessary to be empowered to reach their goals and improve their most important relationships. Since starting my practice in 1983 I have been dedicated to helping clients achieve mastery. I take a very active role, and do "what works" for each client, using a variety of treatment approaches.

The longest and most intimate relationship we'll have is with ourselves. It is also the foundation from which we build all other relationships. Oftentimes, aspects of it can bring us pain and confusion, leading us to develop disruptive thoughts and behaviors. This is when therapy can be helpful. My clients tend to be individuals and couples who realize they are not living at their fullest potential and want to get there. Together, we can create a space where you feel safe to explore problematic patterns and connect with healthy, more productive ones that move you forward.

It is not uncommon for people to talk and think their way 'better'. They have made sense of their problems and wish to 'just move on'. However, they can't seem to rid themselves of the emotional turmoil and physical pain that remains. My clients say to me, 'I just want to move on but my anxiety, depression, trauma, bad habits, pain, guilt, shame, family members...just won't let me'.

My clients are often either grieving, caring for a parent or spouse, or experiencing their own chronic or terminal illness.
A client once reflected , "You help us have hard conversations." I couldn't have said it better myself. I help individuals, couples, and families talk about the stuff no one wants to talk about. Grief, loss, death, dying, moving to memory care, etc - these aren't dinner table conversations folks want to have. But we need to have them. That's where I come in.

I specialize in helping clients heal from trauma and dissociative conditions. I often see clients who have found that prior therapy did not go deep enough or that they can talk about their issues but remain stuck in the same unhealthy patterns. I help clients get beneath words and to transform the deeper feelings and emotions that are driving such patterns. I also have considerable experience working with loss, chronic illness, depression and anxiety, career and relationship transitions, questions of identity/purpose, relationship conflict, and navigating academic and creative work.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
