Since 1980 I have served those struggling with mental illness and personal problems in greater Milwaukee. I mainly help adults and older adults individually. Common topics I treat include depression, bipolar disorder, codependency, abuse, worry, grieving, chronic pain and health issues, and generally dealing with changes. Many I see experienced a long slow decline over time when that, "Straw that Broke the Camel's Back," landed. It became clear that things were just not working, and they need to try something different. That's when many of my people called me.

The decision to seek therapy is not an easy one. I aim to make that decision as easy and comfortable as possible. I have a gentle personality and use a touch of humor to help make each client feel welcome and at ease. Individuals, couples, and families come to me because they need to work through a problem or issue. This might be anxiety, grief, couples or family counseling, health, loss of a job, or looking to build a happier, more fulfilling life, or numerous other reasons. I work hard to build an atmosphere that allows people to feel safe and understood. When clients leave, they feel healthier, happier, and more whole.

My ideal client is one that wants to work on themselves and seeks change. I am directive, interactive and straightforward in my approach. Education, a sense of humor, feedback and curiosity are important in working with clients. My clients are often high functioning free thinkers. Learning to challenge the your internal status quo can often be challenging and scary. Clients I attract are stressed out executives having issues at home, work and with relationships , young adults who are trying to figure out what they want in life, and addicts of any sort who find themselves stuck, "Thinking is this all there is in life?"

No matter what stage of life you are in, we all have "stuff" or baggage that needs to be addressed. Sometimes, we need someone outside of one's circle of support to talk with. Mental health therapy was once a stigma that you must be crazy to see a therapist. That is not the case. Taking care of our mental health is just as critical as caring for ourselves. We can't burn a candle at ten different ends and expect to be caregivers to those around us or those who need our undivided attention.

My areas of specialization are depression, anxiety, addictive issues, codependency.
I try and help people increase the "quality" of their lives which often means helping people whose thinking/behavior and feelings don't seem to connect.I use many different approaches to therapy and draw upon numerous orientations if helpful to the client's goal of change. I strongly advocate for the mind/body connection; healthy mind helps the body be healthier. Past issues are of importance but don't have to be the major focus. I can help you with depression, anxiety, relationship issues and PTSD. I am proud to be a Tricare provider.

I am passionate about working with adults who struggle with codependency; prioritizing another person’s needs and/or behaviors (substance use, gambling, pornography, etc.
Have you ever felt like your life is like a never ending marry-go-round? Or questioned your ability to weather the challenge you might currently be facing? Having one foot in the past and the other swimming in fear of what the future may hold, the present moment can feel much out of your control. Please know you are worthy of living a fulfilling life; pursing your dreams and goals — that at times, may feel unattainable. I would be honored to have the opportunity to be apart of your recovery journey to health, healing and happiness.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?

Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?

Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?

Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?

One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
