Each individual's path is valid and can be enhanced and encouraged by discussing it with a counselor who understands and is open to genuine spirituality.
Tom Galten's therapy style is relaxed and he seeks always to create an atmosphere of trust and good will. Tom sees people of all ages and conducts sessions with families, couples and individuals. He is accustomed to addressing any and all challenges which people typically bring to counseling. In addition to his clinical degrees, Tom also holds a Masters Degree in Pastoral Counseling, which has prepared him well to comfortably address the spiritual issues about which many people report concern. "I believe that any individual or family that wants positive changes in their lives can have them - no exceptions."

There are many benefits of counseling. Counseling helps us figure things out; it can help us achieve our goals, and it can help us mend or improve important relationships in our lives. It can help us find reasons to live and new ways to love ourselves, and it can help us learn to cope with what life has handed us or to grieve what has been taken from us. And overall, counseling can offer reassurance that things are going to be ok. There are a number of reasons people just like you come to counseling; struggling in a relationship, family conflict, help establishing boundaries, processing past trauma, or having problems at work.

Life is a journey and the secret to fulfillment is learning how to journey well. Everyone gets stuck at various points on the journey. Symptoms then emerge that vary with the individual, such as depression, anxiety, compulsions, sleep problems, etc. When we need help, we look for someone with experience and a good psychological base to help us discover why we are stuck and how we keep ourselves stuck. We want someone who will help us find our voice and not superimpose their beliefs and judgments on us. My Jungian ecopsychology framework also helps those who are worried about environmental issues .

I use Buddhist concepts and non-religious spirituality and draw upon mindfulness, energy psychology, and EMDR to help clients regulate their emotions, heal negative self-beliefs, and encourage new, more positive thoughts and emotions.
I work eclectically and flexibly with adults of all backgrounds seeking therapy because of anxiety, depression, trauma, and other issues that block our ability to feel peace and joy in our lives.  Perhaps you find yourself sinking deeper into depression, lacking the enthusiasm you once had for life.  Maybe you find yourself overwhelmed with anxiety.  Perhaps you're feeling it's time to dig deeper and heal old wounds.  Or maybe you have experienced a severe trauma, and life has never been the same since.  I am here to hold space for and to work with you on all levels: mind, heart, body, and spirit.

We all have the ability to access an innate sense of safety, resilience and direction. For those of us experiencing anxiety, panic, OCD, or dealing with the remnants of traumatic experiences, it can be difficult to connect with these internal resources. I enjoy working with college students and adults wanting to re-connect with who they are and what’s important to them, especially in the midst of transition and emotional pain. I also enjoy working with veterans, and with people coping with religious trauma.

My clients are adults and adolescents who tend to identify themselves as highly sensitive, perfectionistic, and self-critical. They often feel intense emotions and have active minds that always seem to be "on". Using strengths-based, solution-focused, and mindfulness approaches, I help individuals learn to step back and notice their thoughts and feelings rather than be controlled by them. In addition to alleviating the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma, these skills allow people to connect with their values and pursue what's important to them.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
