I am a master's trained psychotherapist who believes in the power and importance of interpersonal relationships and the empowerment of the self. I bring a challenging, yet empathic, supportive, engaging and safe approach to psychotherapy. If you are seeking to alleviate emotional distress, make behavior changes or seeking greater self understanding/exploration, feel free to contact me. I realize that engaging in psychotherapy often requires a significant commitment of your time and resources. Due to this, I have office hours that can accomodate most scheduling needs. I also accept private insurance and self payment agreements can also be arranged.

In today’s world, we’re taught the answers to our problems are found in titles, marriages, appearance, material objects, outward success, & money. No matter the ailment, there’s something to chase that’ll make you whole. Modern notions of happiness confine us because, deep down, we know the satisfaction eventually fades. As we become disillusioned to achievement, consumerism, & the newest health fads, we begin to long for something real. The disparity between our deeper needs & the contemporary recipe for fulfillment leaves us feeling empty.

Accepting New Clients! You tell yourself what happened to you wasn't real, but under the busyness of life you know it was. You see it coming up in you ro mantic relationships-the same type of person, the same conflict, the same experience that leaves you with a feeling like there's something wrong with you. Or, maybe you see it in your family relationships-wanting them to meet your needs and always being disappointed. Or, maybe you see it coming up in those moments of lost time-your mind spinning around past hurts. No matter how the trauma may surface, you can no longer live like this.

Marriage therapy; Parenting concerns; Counseling for pastors; Fertility and adoption issues; Spiritual concerns, doubts and questions; Men's issues around communication, emotional health/intelligence, pornography and other addictive or problematic sexual issues; Grief and loss; anxiety; depression; addiction issues.
It's hard for most people to ask for help. I get that. But I am of the belief that there are two categories of people: those who could be helped by therapy and those who actually go out and try it. So, if you are stepping out, asking for help, and giving therapy a try - good for you for taking a risk. My goal right off the bat is to build trust with my clients. Regardless of the issue at hand, I believe the most important and powerful tool is to have a trusted relationship in your corner.

I specialize in extended programs that create a per manent change in the way folks feel about themselves and relate to the world.
I have always enjoyed getting to know the depths of what is going on inside of people. My favorite clients have been hurt and have kept masks on for a while. Their intuition tells them that coming to life means revealing their truth and becoming present with what's going on inside of them. My therapy is not designed to be a one size fits all and I appreciate those who are motivated to grow, even if they're not sure exactly the direction. I enjoy working with anyone overcoming trauma and anyone looking for a big per manent change in their life. I also provide supervision for therapists in training.

Clients wanting to optimize their potential and willing to explore effective solutions from Western and Eastern wisdom traditions are my specialty. During my forty plus years working in psychiatric hospitals, leading residential treatment programs, teaching relationship courses for couples and presenting Mind, Body and Spirit healing seminars, helping others heal the core of their issue is my passion. I work with adolescents, adults, families and couples from every orientation. Of course, the LBGT community is welcome. Respectful of every religious orientation, I love working with anyone wanting to unite their physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects of their being.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
