I see clients in a well diverse population, from children 3 years old to adults 75 years old. I specialize in Mental Health and Addiction counseling, however work well with children and teens. I support the LGBTQ+ community. I have been seen in some movies in the indie film world and have written and published books. I am working on my next book everyday. I have sold several paintings in the Chicagoland area. I like to build things for around the house, most notably two different bird houses equipped with Ring camera's in order to see what is going on inside the houses. I am a creative fun-loving person that likes to help others.

I see anyone within Wisconsin via telehealth - rural or urban, no more being put on the waiting list. I validate and encourage you to become aware of the coping strategies that do not serve you, such as avoidance, numbing, and not showing up for yourself. In the now, we explore how one may be stuck in the past or the future and unable to make healthy choices for today.

My name is Dan Dashner. I am dually licensed in the treatment of mental health and substance use disorders. As a therapist, I prefer to look beyond labels and identify and resolve root causes for emotional pain and suffering. Clients I work with are typically individuals, couples, and families who are experiencing some form of emotional discomfort, or emotional pain. Sometimes this is stress brought on by recent changes to work, family, or significant relationships. Other times the focus of therapy is with clients who've made repeated but unsuccessful attempts at resolving a persistent condition.

Whether this is your first time in therapy, or you have been to therapy before, I respect the fact that you are reaching out. My goal is to make you feel comfortable and address your concerns. Prior to the first session I will send you a biopsychosocial, where it will ask you several questions, which will be very helpful as we get to know each other. We will do a preliminary treatment plan, where we will discuss your treatment goals and how you might start achieving them. It is your plan and you can make changes at any time. Of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have. I want us to be a team.

Our minds condition the quality of every moment of our lives—therapy is uniquely suited to positively engaging with our minds. And of course, our minds are not just our minds; they are our bodies, our relationships, our cultures, our society, our work, our past, our future, our imagination, as well as our thoughts and feelings. Therapy can interface with all of these parts of us, and help us to integrate them, nourishing our life.

The decision to seek therapy is not an easy one. I aim to make that decision as easy and comfortable as possible. I have a gentle personality and use a touch of humor to help make each client feel welcome and at ease. Individuals, couples, and families come to me because they need to work through a problem or issue. This might be anxiety, grief, couples or family counseling, health, loss of a job, or looking to build a happier, more fulfilling life, or numerous other reasons. I work hard to build an atmosphere that allows people to feel safe and understood. When clients leave, they feel healthier, happier, and more whole.

I have found that humor, empathy and understanding, for oneself and others, are key elements in building relationships with people. These qualities are the foundation of all good psychotherapy. I am comfortable working with people from varying spiritual traditions. My abilities are well suited to people who are emotionally sensitive or traumatized. I have worked well with individuals who have had treatment failures in the past, people who are creative, gifted individuals, adolescents and children. Play therapy is effective with children who have cognitive delays.

The number one thing that makes therapy work is the connection between client and therapist. I want to understand what's happening with you so that I can put my skills to good use and help you to meet your therapy goals. My methods are based on scientific research and on my professional experience as a therapist. Many of the techniques I use with clients are techniques that I have applied in my own life to reduce my own suffering and improve my own happiness. I practice much of what I preach, so I know firsthand that these methods work.

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
