I consider it my privilege to join individuals and families on their journeys towards wellness! My approach is supportive, collaborative, and often emphasizes development of skills and enhancement of already-present skills (e.g., coping, conflict resolution, parenting). I consider humor an essential ingredient! I have worked with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults, in a variety of settings such as outpatient, inpatient, and residential, and have prior experience in CPS and adoption services.

We are an outpatient mental health practice located in Ellensburg, WA. We providespsychotherapy, assessment, dietetics, and medication management. We are expanding our telehealth options to reach other rural areas. Our staff includes psychologists, a psychiatric ARNP, licensed mental health counselors, social workers and a registered dietician. Our clinicians are experienced, utilize evidence-based techniques, and offer a wide variety of clinical specialties.

Dr. Joe exclusively provides psychological testing, at which he has 20+ yrs experience. Testing is a great way to answer questions about what’s going on with a person to guide treatment and document eligibility for services and funding, as well as to demystify mental processes that seem abstract and hard to understand. Testing can clarify diagnoses, give a picture of one’s attentional and emotional state, determine learning and developmental levels, and figure out if an ongoing form of treatment is working. Dr. Joe believes mental health services should be fun and human whenever possible! Special needs can often be accommodated.

Although I treat a variety of psychological conditions, I have three main specialty areas. First, I specialize in treating children and adolescents with emotional and/or behavior problems such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, poor school performance, non compliant behavior, substance abuse, and emotional trauma from domestic violence or sexual abuse. I also specialize in working with children, families, and adults who are struggling with issues related to divorce and re-marriage. My third specialty area is treating relationship and marital problems.

Dr. Whitmer treats individuals, couples, and families. His doctoral training in clinical psychology has prepared him to treat many mental health disorders with various interventions. Dr. Whitmer is board certified as a Certified Forensic Mental Health Evaluator and a Forensic Vocational Expert. He is nationally certified as Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, and is International Psychometric Evaluation Certified. Dr. Whitmer is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington State.
