Do you feel stuck, burned out, stressed, anxious, or discouraged? Maybe your inner critic has taken over, or you feel like you just don't measure up. Life can be painful and difficult. We all need extra support at times to rise above it all and thrive. I believe counseling is about making changes so that we can become the people we were meant to be. It takes a lot of courage to engage in this process, so I applaud you for taking the step to find a counselor!

Portia believes that all can reach an optimal state of health and regardless of a person's circumstances, they should be viewed as creative, capable, and valuable individuals. We all experience life differently; therefore, her goal is to offer a safe and secure environment for individuals to experience healing, growth, and hope. As clients explore their issues, they begin to navigate those experiences and start making choices that will facilitate healthy change.

Seen as pillars of society, as a physician you may feel you have no one to turn to right now. The pre-pandemic statistics are especially upsetting: 29% of resident physicians experienced depression; 16% of emergency physicians met the criteria for a post-traumatic stress disorder diagnosis, & doctors have a higher risk of death by suicide compared to other professions. We stand to lose 1 doctor a day to suicide. The pandemic has been especially challenging for physicians, their families, & the medical community in general: doctors are experiencing burnout from new challenges they are encountering. Burnout is not a ride of passage.

The first environment of the unborn child is the womb, where the relationship between mother and child not only are connected on a physical and biological level, but on a psychological and spiritual level as well. Research now shows the stressors experienced by the mother internally, and in the external world, reach the baby in the womb impacting the baby’s physical, psychological development, personality and quality of later relationships. Prenatal Bonding BA creates a "souls cord" attachment that can last a lifetime.

Hi there, and thank you for taking the first step towards healing. I know that life can be tough, and sometimes it can feel like the challenges we face are too much to handle. Whether you are a transracial adoptee family stuggling to create a racially neutral space, navigating divorce, or feeling lost and anxious, I want you to know that I understand. Taking both a experiential and narrative approach to listening and understanding your story, I am passionate about working with couples, children, families, and teens. I'll help you explore your inner strengths and resilience, and together, we'll find a path forward towards healing.

Sometimes, our trauma responses cause us to not make the changes we wish to see in our lives. Sometimes, it feels like no matter what we do, we're getting further away from our goals. I help you process your past so that you can have the future you desire. As a counselor, I help you to understand the patterns that have been present in your life, and how they're currently affecting you. I help you to find the courage, awareness, and strength within yourself to make different choices to get the life you desire.

My name is Alexis Candelier, and I am a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.). I was born and raised in the Greater Portland Metro area and returned to the Pacific Northwest 2 years ago after spending years in Los Angeles, CA attending graduate school and practicing in the field of forensic mental health. Prior to completing my education, I was a Military Police Officer serving in the United States Marine Corps (ooh-rah!), so I take pride in being able to serve my fellow first responders and all the Veterans struggling to make it as a “civilian” in these trying and unprecedented times in a culturally competent and supportive manner.

As a counselor, my role is to create a safe environment where you can feel secure and supported. My style is respectful, warm and interactive. I value a strong therapeutic alliance as a basis for personal and behavioral change and emotional growth. When working with teens, I find collaborating with caregivers to be most effective in fostering growth and positive change. I also find it essential working with adolescents to build a strong rapport as a foundation to further enhance the therapeutic process.

Our work together is a collaboration to reach goals that are in alignment with what brings you peace and joy. I emphasize respect, kindness, and authenticity in order to highlight the balance I believe is needed in developing meaningful relationships. One of my great curiosities in therapy is to learn what those terms mean to my clients and how their presence has shaped who they are.

My approach to therapy is grounded in meeting people where they are, without judgment or preconceptions. I understand that every client is unique, with their own set of experiences, challenges, and strengths. I approach therapy through a collaborative, humorous, multi-cultural, non-judgmental, and compassionate lens, and I acknowledge that the client is the expert of their own experiences. I work towards creating a warm and supportive environment, where healing and growth can take place. Although I utilize an integrative, client-centered, and solution-focused approach, I also incorporate evidenced-based practices into treatment. I believe there is no one approach that will fit every client's needs, so we will work together to find the right approach for you.

I believe that we all have the power deep inside of us to make the changes that we want in our lives. Sometimes it just takes a little bit of extra support and a different perspective along the way. My counseling approach is one of care, compassion, and empathy. It is important to build a strong therapeutic relationship with my client, one that feels comfortable and free from judgment and shame. Therapy is an opportunity for expression, self-exploration, healing, and learning new skills and strategies to address the issues that are getting in your way. Taking care of your mental health is as important as your physical health.

My ideal clients are individuals grappling with mental health challenges, seeking to explore the therapeutic potential of ketogenic diets as a metabolic intervention for symptom reduction. They are motivated to integrate metabolic, functional, and nutritional strategies with psychotherapy to address issues like mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, and cognitive function. These clients are looking for a comprehensive, biopsychosocial approach to improve their mental well-being and meet their wellness goals.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
