While I might be a trained guide, the wilderness of your life belongs to you and my goal is to help you find ways to live in it well. The counseling relationship is a collaboration that will help you uncover the patterns in your life that are simply not working, so together we can discover a new way forward. The focus of my work is with MEN, COUPLES, and YOUNG ADULTS dealing with Stress, Depression, Anger, Sexual Addiction, Life Transitions, and relationship issues.

I have both betrayed my partner and been betrayed by a partner.
Is your world imploding? Betrayal shatters our worlds. Whether the betrayer or the betrayed, it destroys us! Betrayers face a sense of powerlessness, loneliness, and hopelessness: realizing they can never be really known or completely love another. And, the betrayed dazedly look at a million shattered pieces of the life they thought they knew and wonder if they can trust themselves or another again. Betrayal, fear, and grief traumatize us and become our constant companions. Shock often sets in. We feel isolated & alone. But real, lasting help is available. You don’t have to stay stuck in this frightening & paralyzing space.

I work with adults and couples experiencing attachment injuries and disconnection. In sessions, we will explore emotion and the way it sits in the body, understand patterns in your relationships, and utilize experiential activities that engage the parts of your self/experience that want to be heard. Ultimately, your voice, strengths, and needs will determine the route we take. Clients who are ready to take ownership of their wellness and experience deeper levels of vulnerability often feel significant change.

We will use the therapeutic relationship to increase understanding, challenge unhelpful thinking, bolster strengths and resources, and create movement towards a better quality of life grounded in your beliefs and values.
My caseload is full and I will update my profile when openings are available. Contact my office if you would like to be on my waitlist. People are resilient and capable of change to improve the quality of their lives. Whether desiring to get unstuck from a pattern of behavior (e.g., ineffective communication or substance use); struggling with anxiety, fear, depression, or trauma symptoms; or facing a difficult loss or transition, people often feel alone in their suffering and desire for change. These are human experiences. You are not alone. Together we will partner to identify and treat the crux of the problem.

I also work with couples to break unhealthy patterns of communication and rekindle foundational friendships.
If you have felt taken advantage of by spiritual leaders, hurt by those who are meant to shepherd, or just turned off by the hypocrisy of the church, we could be a great fit. I work with young adults and grown adults to help you discover a more meaningful way to integrate with your negative spiritual experiences with whatever your remaining faith may look like. Empathy and humor is central to how I interact with clients. If you’re ready to see a change in your life, even if it seems out of reach, please reach out and let me join you on your journey.

Since 2005, I have worked with culturally diverse at-risk youth, individuals, groups, couples, and families in residential, community, private, school, and forensic counseling environments.
Reflecting on my own counseling practice, I have discovered the overwhelming strength and healing power of human connectedness which is an essential cornerstone of my therapeutic counseling relationships. Life is a journey filled with both opportunities and challenges. When daily life and/or life transitions seem too overwhelming, the guidance and support provided from a trusted professional who is empathetic and objective can be informative, empowering, and restorative. I use cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic interventions to help clients discover how conscious and unconscious thoughts impact emotions and behaviors. In addition, I draw from a variety of counseling theories to meet each client's individual needs.

I see adults and couples, and, though I treat a wide variety of problems, I specialize in couple therapy and in treating complex trauma and substance use disorders.
If you’re looking for a therapy of depth, insight, and durability; if you’re seeking a highly-trained therapist with over 35 years of experience who listens carefully, deeply, and thoughtfully; if you’ve been disappointed by ‘quick fix’ approaches that promise much and deliver little; if you want an individualized approach designed specifically with your needs in mind, then please call me to discuss whether we might be a good fit.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
