Look, seeking out counseling is a weird experience. It can be uncomfortable and scary to reach out for help. On the flip side, it is also an affirming experience to have someone see you for you. No judgement. No expectations. Just a person who is here to sit with you when the world feels scary and overwhelming.

Lovejoy Therapy is the name of my private practice, one of my personal dreams coming to life of being able to show up for others. I believe as humans we all face challenges and many of us face trauma that has an impact on us throughout our entire lives and can keep us from living the lives we dream of. These concerns can be the things that hold us back from living our life fully or being able to create a life we believe is worth living. In my practice with clients, I attempt to help people discover a way for themselves to find health, move forward and start thriving instead of surviving.

Reasons for seeking therapy are unique to each of us; we may suffer due to difficult relationships, grief, loss, neglect or may just feel lost, stuck, or empty. Symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, hold information for us and can be invitations to growth that lead to new ways of knowing ourselves. Regular encounters of support, validation, and connection in a non-judgmental environment allow us to explore and sort out the chaos that comes at us and churns within us daily.

On the surface, you have everything under control - yet you carry an iceberg's worth of emotion underneath. It's difficult to give space to your feelings and thoughts, or to communicate them to others. You're stuck in unhelpful patterns, but change feels threatening. Your life is filled with "shoulds," rules, and high expectations. You are often your own worst critic. You feel lonely, and you long to be seen - but the vulnerability that would require seems impossible. I can help you understand yourself and your experiences, get out of your comfort zone, and tap into joy.

Sometimes in life we may feel “stuck” and unsure how to move, overwhelmed, or alone. We may experience depression or anxiety, go through an experience that leaves us shaken, or hit the end of our rope and burnout. For some of us, we reach a place in life where we lose touch with ourselves or perhaps even come to a crossroads where we have a drastic shift in our understanding of the world and question all that we have known. It is in these times where we may be looking for extra support and need a calm, compassionate space to be seen…

COUPLES! Are you feeling more like roommates than lovers? Having a difficult time relating to one another? Take comfort in knowing that you are not alone. All couples go through phases in their relationship. Sometimes couples have a difficult time moving from one phase to another and need assistance in gaining momentum. Negotiating life as a couple can be difficult. Most people want to feel connected, cared for, and understood by their mate. Sometimes it feels as though there are two strangers living together. If this is you do not lose hope...

Entering mental health and/or addictions recovery is a significant life transition, whether you are taking this on for yourself or supporting a loved one. I can offer you support in conjunction with your work in a self-help group, during or following treatment, or even to help you deepen your recovery beyond abstinence and/or medication management. When someone struggles with mental health and/or substance abuse, it can affect their friends and families too (even after they get help and/or when entering recovery). I can help loved ones who are seeking therapy for themselves so they get the support they need.

The common misconception is that therapy is for "crazy" or "sick" people. Instead I believe it is a chance to work with clients on how to use their challenges as opportunities for change and growth. It is also a time to better understand our view of the world, examine any relationship issues, and become better versions of ourselves. I focus on each individual's unique characteristics, instead of what a diagnosis may say about them.

You deserve the very best therapist. Therapy isn’t easy to dive into, right? I get that! My 20 years of combined experience as a LICSW, Music Therapist, Somatic Yoga Teacher (for all body types) and Army Behavior Health Provider has given me rich experience with all sorts of unique people, and I’m not your cookie cutter therapist. I’ll be very real and authentic with you. I deeply appreciate pain and trauma, and how it can dismantle your life. And if I’m not the best therapist for you, I will be honest and help you to find someone who is. You deserve to have the life you want again, and I’m committed to helping you get that back.

I enjoy supporting children and families through play therapy, art therapy (and sometimes talk therapy too)! I believe in the resilience and strength of children and their families. I believe that children process the world through play, art and movement as much as, if not more than, they do through words. I believe in the power of play to help children make sense of their experiences and struggles and move toward positive change. I believe in the power of play to help families reconnect and build strong alliances with one another.

My name is Alexis Candelier, and I am a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.). I was born and raised in the Greater Portland Metro area and returned to the Pacific Northwest 2 years ago after spending years in Los Angeles, CA attending graduate school and practicing in the field of forensic mental health. Prior to completing my education, I was a Military Police Officer serving in the United States Marine Corps (ooh-rah!), so I take pride in being able to serve my fellow first responders and all the Veterans struggling to make it as a “civilian” in these trying and unprecedented times in a culturally competent and supportive manner.

Times of uncertainty often draw our attention to our fears and anxieties, but they also illuminate the things that are most important to us. Whether you’re wanting to learn more about yourself; worrying about your child’s well-being; suffering the loss of a loved one; processing abuse or trauma; experiencing a major life transition; feeling unsatisfied in your relationships; or are just wanting more out of life, therapy may be a great place to start.

I am deeply passionate about helping people feel better and experience RELIEF from intense emotional pain and suffering. As a therapist, I am no stranger to deep suffering. In fact, it has been the single most powerful catalyst to who I have become, personally and professionally. I LOVE this work. Nobody escapes trauma in this life. To be human is to suffer. But we can learn how to manage and navigate the things we can't control. We can HEAL from our pain. We can rise from the most desperate of circumstances. We can become FREE. I carry a continual burning torch of hope and light for every sacred person I sit with. I believe in you.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
