I have worked with families and children involved in divorce parenting issues for 34 years and have worked with over 3,000 families involved in high conflict custody disputes as a mediator, co- parenting counselor, parenting coordinator, reunification counselor and Guardian ad Litem.
Are you at your wit's end trying to communicate with your ex. Are your kids constantly exposed to conflict between the two of you. Co- parenting after divorce can be difficult. Separating personal issues from parenting issues is a skill that parents find challenging. Co- parenting counseling is an opportunity to discuss problematic issues in a non-threatening environment with help from someone experienced in facilitating communication with divorce issues. You can learn to focus on parenting concerns without the intrusion of past relationship problems. Parents find that it is possible to resolve tough issues without court intervention.

I have been in the mental health field since 2014 and have worked with various ages and demographics. With a background that includes being a military child, collegiate athlete, and now a parent myself, I have found that I enjoy working with people who are finding themselves in a time of change. At this time, I am seeing clients 14 and older who need extra support in finding coping skills, navigating symptoms of depression or anxiety, communication skills, relationship challenges, and boundary work among other goals. At this time, I will also be taking a break from couples therapy and will update once accepting new clients.

Becoming a parent is more challenging and chaotic than you anticipated. You feel disconnected from yourself, your loved ones, and your pre-baby life. Instead of enjoying this time, you’re overwhelmed with feelings of fear, anger, guilt, shame, resentment, and loneliness. You want to feel less reactive and more intentional, spending time on what matters to you. I totally get the whirlwind of overwhelm, anxiety, and that all-consuming exhaustion that can hit during this transition. If you’re feeling a bit like a tightrope walker juggling chaos, fear, and boundary-busting stress, I’m here to help.

Hello, my name is Sandra Golling, owner of LovedAlive Counseling. We all face challenges as we seek to grow and thrive in our life and relationships. When people are experiencing conflict, wounds, losses, or find themselves stuck in a particular life transition, therapy helps navigate these challenges. Wounds and losses in life often lead to relational difficulties and low self-esteem. Therapy can assist in the grieving process leading to resolution and peace. New ways of relating can be identified and practiced leading to healthier and more satisfying relationships.

Life Is Life-ing! Tired, stressed, angry, and stuck are common feelings that may be causing you significant distress and disconnection from those you love. You want to get back to feeling like yourself again. Or maybe even define a different version of yourself or relationship. It can be challenging to know you need to make a change, but not know how to get there.

I believe that the relationship to our self is the most important relationship that we will ever have. A bond with a therapist who witnesses and understands us in a nonjudgmental way can be a wonderful ally in improving that relationship and making positive changes in our lives. Trauma, attachment issues, toxic families of origin, oppression, grief, and ancestral/family patterns are just some just some examples that can cause suffering that motivates someone to start therapy. I have experience working with clients with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, and other mood disorders that make it difficult to function in life.

Sometimes people see counseling/coaching as a process that could be negative: trying to decipher & share feelings, opening up old wounds, resistance to change. It’s uncomfortable and uncertain to delve deep into these areas of our life. We all want to live “our best lives”. We strive to be financially secure, take care of our physical health through diet & exercise, see the benefit of being social and doing fun things, attempt to engage in meaningful relationships, seek spirituality and a sense of transcendence. But we fail in many of these pursuits when we don't understand our own inner-workings.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
