I use strength-based models such as Positive Psychology, Person-Centered Therapy and Reality Therapy to help my clients build self-efficacy.
The high school years are complicated. Teens are complicated. You're wondering where your happy child went and how to get them back. As a Mental Health Counselor and former High School Counselor that has worked with thousands of teens, I believe this unique developmental stage is deserving of specialized care. Teenage mental health is different than adults and children which is why we have to treat it differently. It doesn't have to be about disorders, labels and canned treatments. I believe teenage mental health is about seeing this complex developmental and transitional stage of life as an extraordinary opportunity for growth.

I work with clients to discover the root of the shame, often stemming from developmental trauma, and partnering to change the maladaptive narrative into a strength-based version that more constructively allows for forward movement, belief in self, the experience of joy, and the ability to foster healthy relationships with loved ones.
Existing in this modern world can be a complex and overwhelming experience. Messages of perfectionism and achievement are all around us. It is common to experience periods of functional freeze, where you feel a sense of paralysis around choice and forward movement. Shame can encourage thoughts and feelings of worthlessness and self-loathing that promote behaviors that we do not want to participate in, yet we find ourselves feeling stuck with. Why do we feel this shame? Why do we feel so weak? Will we ever feel joy again? How can we empower ourselves to begin stepping out of the shadows and into the light?

If you expect the world to conform to you, you may also expect a lifetime of bitter resentment. No problem is an impairment until you allow yourself to take up the cry of "I Cannot, I Cannot, I Cannot." Some therapists will "support" you in this cry and hold your hand as you walk into hell. Let's turn your heart towards "I Can, I Will, I Am."

Strength-Based Therapists
How does strength-based therapy work?
During strength-based therapy sessions, the therapist will ask about an individual’s experiences of stress, pain, or trauma with the goal of orienting the client to view themselves as a survivor rather than a victim, and focusing on their strengths rather than on their weaknesses. In framing a client’s personal narrative along these lines, the therapist and client work together to identify existing skills that can be harnessed.
Is strength-based therapy evidence-based?
Strength-based therapy is an evidence-based treatment that has been studied extensively and shown to be effective across domains. The treatment has been found to be particularly effective in helping individuals who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health concerns. Strength-based therapy has been used by therapists to help clients for more than 60 years.
How long does strength-based therapy last?
There’s no precise timeline for strength-based therapy. The duration of treatment depends on the individual’s specific needs and goals and the severity of their concerns. Some individuals may find they achieve their therapeutic goals quickly, while others might benefit from ongoing support and guidance in order to continue progressing.
How effective is strength-based therapy?
Clinical research and decades of practice have shown strength-based therapy to be an effective treatment to improve mental health and well-being for many conditions. The treatment can engender a sense of connection and collaboration between the therapist and the individual, fostering a positive therapeutic relationship. For individuals with narcissistic tendencies, strength-based therapy may be less effective, as the focus on the individual’s strengths may undermine the work needed to honestly assess the challenges the individual faces.
