My primary goal is to help you make effective changes in your life and relationships. I am compassionate and caring, but I firmly believe that therapy should be more than just supportive talking. I want to hear what you have been struggling with and help you understand how you continue to fall into the same patterns. But I also want to diagnose your situation, present treatment options based on a knowledge of what works, and support your efforts as you learn to identify and transform old patterns of thinking and behaving. I want to help you become less “stuck” and live according to your values – and that is not always easy!

Relationships are at the core of almost everything we do - building ro mance, sharing quality time with friends, creating a professional network among colleagues, enjoying family, supporting our community, and most importantly is the relationship with ourselves. Sometimes these relationships come easily and are fulfilling, while at other times they can make our life more challenging and stressful. Whether you're looking for help with one of these relationships specifically, or simply need a hand during a difficult time, I am here to support you.

I have a Master's degree from Pacific Lutheran University in Marriage and Family Therapy, and have been in practice for over 25 years. I am a Washington State designated as a Child Mental Health Specialist and a Registered Circle of Security Parent Educator. Over my years in practice, I have worked with families, couples, adolescents, and individuals. The goal of therapy is to help you understand yourself and others within a relationship. My goal is to help you see your behavior patterns at a processing level, so you may disrupt these patterns for new, healthy behaviors. For example, ending chronic people-pleasing habits.

While serving overseas I developed a deep understanding of the loss, grief, and trauma (physical and psychological) that hu mans can encounter.
Across the prairies of our country when a storm is approaching, cattle can be seen running away, which only elongates their discomfort. Buffalo on the other hand, can be seen turning and charging into the storm. As a result they reduce their duration of suffering and make it to clear skies sooner. My goal is to connect with individuals and couples who are navigating the storms of life and help them become the best versions of themselves. I utilize a warm and casual style that facilitates an environment of trust and support, allowing clients space to build effective skills and develop resiliency for the inevitable storms ahead.

Waitlist for new clients
Attachment theory--the idea that hu mans have a need for consistent and flexible (but not perfect!) emotional connection throughout their lives--informs my work.
Do you feel disconnected? Do you feel a wall between you and a loved one? Do you feel like you are going around and around in circles but never moving forward? When clients come to see me they often feel hurt, numb, confused, frustrated, lost, or alone. I help clients identify the negative patterns they get caught in, connect with themselves and those they care about most, and support them in finding new solutions to old problems.

To the outside world, you have it all together. You’re the person who’s always on top of everything, eyes on the ball, getting things done. But, inside is a different story. People admire your drive, but the truth is you don’t feel like you have any choice but to keep pushing forward. You resent the feeling of being trapped on this path. But you know that if you slow down, even for a moment, you’ll have to deal with the pain you’ve been desperately trying to outrun. Of course, no matter how fast you go, the pain will always be there, ready to overwhelm you the first chance it gets. You don’t know what to do – it feels hopeless.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
