We all experience pain in life; it’s a part of the human experience. Pain can leave wounds and leave us feeling fragmented. I am passionate about working with self-aware clients to help people integrate these fragmented parts into a more whole self. We will build on your own strengths and resilience. My work often focuses on helping adult individuals heal from traumas, assisting people in sharing their thoughts and feelings, and helping clients connect to their bodies through self-compassion and kindness.

Welcome! My name is Dan Meier and I am a relational, psychodynamic therapist. In practice, this means I work collaboratively with my clients and pay special attention to stories, embodied messages, and relational dynamics. I work this way because I believe harm and healing both take place within the context of relationship. Counseling offers the opportunity to explore our painful stories in the presence of an attuned, compassionate professional and rediscover our hope. Together, you and I will work toward meaningful change, greater self-acceptance, and deep healing.

No one has the blueprint for life's challenges. Clients I have worked with have felt overwhelmed, unsure, and motivation was low. Many experience negative thinking patterns, stress, difficulty with concentration, and hopelessness. These challenges may have impacted well-being, relationships, work, or school. Like you, they were looking for a way forward. I provide counseling to empower my clients to tackle life with confidence. Clients see me to feel supported in their journey, learn new skills and tools, increase executive functioning, create and support relationships, find success, and boost mental health.

Finding a "good fit" is essential when looking for a therapist. You should feel safe to be your authentic self without feeling judgment. I believe the client/therapist relationship is primary for healing and effective work. Within that relationship, I consider you the expert on your own life. While thoughtfully listening, I will also offer insights, invitations to try something new, and help you in building new skills and finding solutions. People tend to find me warm, accepting, and engaging.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
