Choosing a counselor is an important. I have 30+ years of experience helping individuals, couples and families. My support is to help clients manage emotions and reactions, increase communication skills, self-esteem and confidence. As I come alongside your journey I also understand the difficulties with self-disclosure and the barriers to change. I can provide a brief consultation to determine fit, and determine how I might support your goals.

Life can be challenging. Maybe you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stressed, confused, or stuck. Maybe the things that used to help you feel better aren’t helping so much anymore. Perhaps you are experiencing a sense of disconnection from who you want to be or from people important to you. Know that what you are feeling is valid, and you have the capacity to change. I welcome anyone seeking help, and have experience serving individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ and as members of various ethnic and cultural groups. I also recognize that as a white, cisgender, hetero male, my life experience may be quite different from yours.

When we create, we heal. When we heal, we create. The goal of our collaborative relationship is not to tell merely a good story, but a true story: to help you discover more of your fullest and most authentic self, and to start living it out. Oftentimes hurt, trauma, and harm destroys our imagination for a flourishing future. I am committed to helping you restore that in your life.

Everyone experiences difficulty and pain, and for many of us, these stressors also prevent us from leading our most fulfilling lives. Oftentimes we may not even know why we feel or act a certain way, only that there must be a better option. I work with those 18+ who are trying to overcome these challenges to live effective and fulfilled lives, whatever their circumstance. I use a Hu manistic approach in therapy, focusing on understanding your perspective to collaboratively achieve your goals.

I specialize in working with: recovery from anxiety or depression; addressing conflict or dissatisfaction in one’s intimate or family relationships; alcohol or drug use, or another form of addiction; and processing and healing physically or emotionally traumatic experiences, whether from childhood or current. My experiences have fostered in me the belief that change can happen for anyone.

I use a variety of approaches ranging from cognitive reframing, exploration of defense mechanisms and automatic thoughts, training in mindfulness, bodily awareness, and examination of feelings, among others. I am interested in the ways in which we each determine our realities, what our minds say to us, and the insight that can be gained from examining those.

Accepting New Clients: Having difficulty finding a therapist of color who understands your experience? I understand your struggle. As an African American male, I too had trouble finding a therapist of my own. Being a person of color in our society comes with its own unique experience, along with the everyday struggles and challenges we all face. It’s difficult and frustrating to have to explain this unique experience to someone before you can even address your reason for being there. But you continue searching because you know you need someone who understands your experience and can help you with life’s struggles.

As kids, we were told that if we did everything right, we would have a life to be proud of. As adults, many of us are wondering if it all was just a fairy tale. We got the job, but now life is just wash-rinse-repeat; we’re bored. A change in job could help, but what if I told you that we as adults sometimes forget to invest in ourselves, outside of our career…and thus, we forget who we were before we got the degree; before we got the job. We forget we were once multidimensional creatures with other amazing facets than our job title. I want to help you get back to that version of yourself. Let’s help you find the magic in life again.

Many of my clients are also working through issues related to life transitions or repeating relational patterns.
Counseling is a space where we focus with intensity and grace on the areas of life that feel chaotic or stagnant. It’s a space to bring understanding to parts that have remained silent or provide comfort to the internal voices that have needed to be too loud. It’s a space to become more connected and integrated, more whole.

I strongly believe that we all have the capacity for actualization and fulfillment in our lives as engaged hu man beings who are full participants in the world. Helping others through this journey is the main focus of what I do in my practice. Often psychotherapy and counseling are used to simply address issues and problems. If we were to use a number score to describe our lives, they get us from being in the negative to zero. The problem goes away. But we can employ these same skills and methods to get us beyond that. Why not hit a two, or a five, or even a ten? For me, this is the big picture of what therapy can offer.

I've served as director of a Seattle sexual addiction recovery agency, hosted a syndicated radio show on recovery and relationships, and am the author of Men's Secret Wars and The Boundaries Book.
I believe that almost all change that occurs in therapy comes from forming a safe therapeutic relationship, and in the context of that relationship increasing your awareness of self, challenging your old beliefs, establishing appropriate boundaries in relationships with others, and experiencing and letting go of old pain. My task is to support you in that process. I tend to be active in therapy. I ask questions, offer observations, and look for patterns in the client's life. However, I believe the client is the final expert on themselves, and I trust in their unique healing process.
