I work with many diagnoses but especially trauma.
Self-compassion is the move. You’re motivated to change, but it’s hard. Negative events can shape beliefs we don’t realize we have, so trying to “just let go” is like asking your brain to pretend its memories are wrong. Therapy can break through that, but it has to start with self-compassion. I probably won’t shut up about it, but that’s how we plant our feet to push forward. I've been a therapist for a decade for a very wide range of clients and I'm proud to have been a lot of people's 4th/5th/8th/9th therapist and had them say they felt like something finally clicked for them. I care about it clicking.

I have spent many hours providing therapy to clients in both private practice and community mental health settings.
My approach to therapy is hu manistic and relational. I believe that pain and suffering are an unavoidable part of the hu man experience, but they do not have to be a per manent, all-consuming state of affairs. We all get stuck from time to time. Finding a way forward can seem unimaginable or downright impossible at times; we can become immobilized by fear, confusion, and indecision, or stuck in lifelong patterns of behavior that have outlived their usefulness. But through dialogue with a caring, curious, and compassionate other, we can find new ways to heal, to grow, and to move forward with our lives.

I provide a comfortable, intentional and meaningful therapy space. For individuals, therapy is a place for self exploration and perspective taking, for healing and personal growth, for curiosity and crafting / creating balance and harmony and better understandings (of self, and of the world around you). For couples and families, therapy is a place for deepening connection and building stronger senses of togetherness and dynamics and intimacy. It's a place to strip away blame, and guilt, and shame, and rebuild with joy, purpose, love and healthy communication.

Welcome. Are you looking for more joy and better relationships? My training has taught me to help people examine and describe the life they have, identifying areas in which they are "stuck," and reconnect to the life-goals that motivated them. Sometimes this stuckness has to do with certain feelings, sometimes it is about past traumas, often it shows up as repeating patterns in significant relationships, and sometimes it manifests as a malaise in which a direction in life seems impossible to find.

Nowadays there are so many counselors and therapists out there.
My office is a safe space for all individuals and couples. People look to counseling for a variety of reasons - anxiety, depression, dissatisfaction, misery. Those who find work with me helpful seek fuller understanding of themselves and their connections in the world. We take a compassionate and curious stance as we pay attention to you. Through the lens of attachment, we examine how your current experience of (in)security and safety influence your feelings and choices in adulthood. In couple work we look at repairing what interferes with meeting each partner's normal hu man need for safety and connection with one another.

I am a Certfied Gott man Therapist (CGT) with expertise in a research based style for couples therapy.
My practice focuses almost exclusively on couples therapy. However, I do have a limited number of openings for individuals, especially when their primary issue of concern is related to their relationships.

My therapeutic orientation is psychodynamic in nature, and based on the observation that people are often unaware of unconscious influences that determine their thoughts and actions.  Lack of awareness can often lead to behavior that constrains their ability to fully comprehend or work through the difficulties they are facing.  My hope is to help remove problematic symptoms that prohibit individuals from participating in meaningful relationships with themselves and others, while working toward leading a full and productive life as an active and positive contributor to their community.

I help people who struggle with problems that they feel are impossible to change, understand, or even think about. I work well with individuals who are sensitive and creative, and need someone to help them understand what they've been through and how it impacts them in the here-and-now. In my experience, doing this kind of work with someone you trust offers the best hope for lasting change. I don't work well with people who want to be "fixed" without coming to know themselves better in the process.

You've come into adulthood as a queer and/or trans person, and you’re realizing that everything is harder than you envisioned. Some of what happened in your past is coming back to affect you, or maybe it has for quite some time. You’re learning more and more that many places in the world haven’t been designed for you, or that the spaces you find yourself in don’t account for the real you. You don’t feel very good about yourself, and what you've tried so far hasn't made the impact that you've wanted it to. You’re stuck, anxious, overwhelmed, lonely, or scared - or all of the above.

In psychotherapy much depends upon the rapport. You must feel comfortable with the therapist and hopeful about the therapy. When you feel this way, therapy is more likely to be helpful to you. I have been practicing clinical psychology since 1977. I focus on the interplay between our internal world and our relations with others. Not restricted to one approach, I integrate a range of useful change strategies including interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral. Psychotherapy is both an educational process and an interpersonal process. Each person’s experience is unique. I have special interest in eating disorders, relationship disturbances, depression, and stress.
