My therapy practice is rooted in attachment theory and experiential therapy, with advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and sex therapy interventions.
Do you feel like your partner just doesn’t hear you? Do you have the same fight over and over without resolution? Maybe you’re desperate for more emotional and sexual intimacy and don’t know how to get your needs met. Or perhaps you feel alone even when they’re right beside you. Let’s work together to better your communication, resolve conflict, create a stronger, more secure attachment, and learn how to express and receive your emotional and sexual needs. I support all relationship dynamics and structures, especially LGBTQIA+, kink, BDSM, and polyamorous/ENM.

I have also received specialized training in body psychotherapy, experiential therapy, and energy work to address those concerns holistically.
I think life can be compared to a Hero’s Journey. While we may not have the same linear storyline with visible obstacles and hard earned victories, we are on a journey nonetheless. Therapy can help us explore the uncharted domains of our psyche, our overwhelming fears, our surprising heroic capabilities, and our joy. I use an integration of many therapeutic modalities in order to explore this including relational psychodynamic therapy, somatic/body psychotherapy, and attachment based therapy creating a more experiential and formative experience overall.

I use a compassionate, holistic, person-centered approach because I recognize that you are the expert on you, and that exploring vulnerability began with you choosing to reach out for support. Because you are an individual with your own collection of needs and goals, I draw on several practices and modalities, including: Strengths-based Therapy; Narrative Therapy; Experiential Therapy; Somatic Therapy; nonviolent communication; personality typing; core values; identifying and holding boundaries; processing personal, social, and cultural roles; and achieving your best Identity of Self.

I use a variety of techniques in my practice, but focus on somatic therapy, experiential therapy, positive psychology, and internal family systems.
Counseling with me is not just “talking about problems” but looking at all of you and identifying how to help you feel more alive. I called my practice OpenHand Counseling as I believe almost anything worthwhile in life requires us to trust, collaborate, and extend ourselves. It's hard to hold a tool, cook a meal, garden, write, play a sport, give affection to another or a pet, or do almost anything without opening my fingers to meet the world. Whether you are processing past events, working towards achieving goals and plans for your life, or just need additional support, let’s work together to get you where you want to go.

I specialize in trauma-informed, postmodern, and experiential therapy.
In times that can seem harsh and unfair, it can be hard to find a way forward. I believe that our problems are not “all in your head.” There are real reasons we feel the way we feel, and they deserve to be heard and honored. Systemic oppression, world events, and childhood experiences have a real effect on us. If the world has ever told you who you are is “not okay”, it may feel dangerous just to exist in certain spaces, let alone to act on your feelings and desires. I hope our work will help you better understand how to unite your Self, your values, and your circumstances to build the life you want to live.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LMFTA). What this means for our sessions is that I will provide a professional guiding hand for your individual, relationship, or family therapy journey. Your voice is extremely important and a vital piece of my practicing philosophy is that this will be a safe space for said voice to be uplifted through our work. Some of the theories we might concentrate on together are solution focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and experiential therapy. I also provide an affirming environment for queer, gender inclusive, and multiculturally competent care.

I enjoy working with folks looking to improve their relationship with themselves and others. The world is not so kind as to leave us without bruises and painful experiences, but they do not have to be what defines us. Whether you’re facing a tough inner critic, wanting to process something traumatic, feeling numb or detached from life, or feeling dissatisfied, you have the innate ability to heal. With a little help, you can improve your connections, gain more confidence in responding, and navigate challenging situations in a grounded, authentic way.

Scientifically, change occurs when we develop new neural pathways. Humanly, change occurs when we experience. Nature helps to facilitate change within our brain as we embrace our innate biophilia. When we connect and identify with land, we re-own its vital and powerful energies, and the dynamism of the Earth is reflected within us.Through facilitated integration with nature, it is my objective to help reconnect you with the natural world. Along with nature-based activities, talk therapy is offered. However, sometimes the silence we experience in nature can be a great teacher. It is up to you determine what works best for you!

I see therapy as an opportunity to work toward growth, self-discovery, and healing. I believe that people come to me not only with where they may be stuck or hurting, but also with incredible strengths and abilities. Through warmth, collaboration, and direct communication I hope to help uncover patterns that are getting in the way of living well. I use an experiential, emotion + body focused approach along with art therapy and practical tools to develop new ways of experiencing and approaching the hard stuff in life.

Sometimes clients who reach out to me are struggling with identifiable issues - depression, anxiety, addictions, stress, grief, life transitions, or illness. Sometimes they're couples grappling with the fallout of infidelity or suffering from a loss of intimacy. And sometimes new clients don't even know what the problem is. They just know something isn't working. I've been practicing for over thirty years, helping individuals and couples gain a deeper understanding of themselves and each other so they can live whole-heartedly and in the present.

Experiential Therapy

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
