I am an openly queer cisgendered male.
Issues such a stress, anxiety and depression can be debilitating. You may feel exhausted, irritable, confused, hurt and angry. You may act out your feelings by isolating and distancing yourself from people who care about you. You may find that your work, relationships and friendships suffer as you are suffering. Struggling is difficult and it can feel hard to know where to turn.

I strongly believe that we all have the capacity for actualization and fulfillment in our lives as engaged human beings who are full participants in the world. Helping others through this journey is the main focus of what I do in my practice. Often psychotherapy and counseling are used to simply address issues and problems. If we were to use a number score to describe our lives, they get us from being in the negative to zero. The problem goes away. But we can employ these same skills and methods to get us beyond that. Why not hit a two, or a five, or even a ten? For me, this is the big picture of what therapy can offer.

My name is Jim Porter and I'm a Psychotherapist based in the Seattle area. My approach to therapy is relational with an emphasis on the creation of a safe setting where you will be heard well enough that you begin to hear your own voice in a new way. Therapy can be a partnership where we examine the issues and distress that brought you here in the present as well as possible contributing events and ideas from the past, all with an eye on what you want your future to look and feel like. My goal is to help you identify what is most important to you, organize and tolerate any feelings that arise in order to be your most authentic self.

I work with individuals 18 years and older going through many different struggles and experiences. I provide therapy that is guided by the uniqueness and individuality of each person trying to live in a messy and complicated world. I like to focus on the totality of who you are as a person, including thoughts, feelings, past experiences, identity (i.e. race, sexuality, gender), family and cultural background, and our relationship to our bodies and our environment. I believe the complexity of our whole selves influences how we live in the world, and that gaining a better understanding of ourselves can bring growth and healing.

I work with teens, couples, and adults. I believe that psychotherapy offers unique possibilities for healing and growth. The first step in therapy is to understand your needs and develop an approach and plan that will help achieve your goals. I will listen carefully and thoughtfully to you. This opens up new ways of approaching problems. Working together lightens the load.

I am a licensed psychotherapist in the state of Washington. I work with adults, couples and teens who are at a place in their life where they are wanting or needing to make a change, but sometimes not sure how to go about it. My approach encourages clients to take responsibility for their lives but also helps to uncover what obstacles have gotten in the way of them feeling powerful, happy, and in charge of their direction in life.

Awareness is everything. How often do we ask ourselves: "How did I get back here again?" - repeating patterns of self-defeating behavior. Raising our awareness of these patterns can help free us from re-engaging in them. The rewards of this exploration are bountiful - as we watch new, healthier behaviors emerge. We get a glimpse of the gifts that life can offer us by simply getting out of our own way. In my practice, I have had the privilege of witnessing the emotional freedom that change can bring and its powerful healing of depression, anxiety and trauma.

I work with people individually, and in relationships that struggle to effectively communicate their needs. Because of how they were brought up, or conditioned through experience, they might have vastly different ways of showing up in relationships, especially through conflict. We all want to work on what drives our behavior so that we can better understand ourselves and each other. This allows us to be vulnerable with one another and experience our real selves, so we can connect and love on a much deeper and more meaningful and satisfying level.

Therapy is about learning how to tell our stories. It is deepening our courage to look ourselves in the face and tell the truth of what we find. It is taking in the bountiful love in the world though it sometimes seems impossible to find. It is learning to savor the taste of a good meal and laughter with others. It is knowing the name of our sadness whether or not we can find our tears. It is being. Just as we are with hope for more to come.

I work with children and adolescents struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, grief and loss, family changes, challenging peer relationships and the behaviors that can result from these issues. I have training and experience using Play Therapy and Sandplay, which employ children's natural way of communicating and learning, as well as other therapeutic modalities as appropriate to each individual. My approach is client centered and often non-directive, believing that when children experience emotional safety in a non-judgmental relationship, their inner wisdom naturally emerges to guide their learning, healing and growth.

When we create, we heal. When we heal, we create. In therapy, the goal of our collaborative relationship is not to tell merely a good story, but a true story: to help you discover more of your fullest and most authentic self, and to start living it out. Oftentimes hurt, trauma, and harm destroys our imagination for a flourishing future. Creativity is a way to get a foot in the door to healing and integration. I am committed to helping you experience restoration in your life so you may live out your most flourishing story.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
