The problem with most approaches to anger management is that they teach that anger is an emotion.
If you struggle with anger, stress, and/or relationship conflict, I can help you understand what's going on and teach you effective, empowering, and expedient ways of growing stronger through your struggle. Remember, struggling is not the problem, struggling is a part of life, it's about learning to "struggle well." If you're tired of constantly struggling to understand; if the frustration is overwhelming; if your relationship, your job, or even your freedom is on the line, I can help.

I work with people who struggle to manage anger, who are struggling to create and maintain emotional and relational intimacy, and people who are finding it hard to manage loss, work stress, anxiety, and depression.
I seek to create a warm, down-to-earth, and accepting experience for you to explore the hard-ass things in life. Many of us, myself included, were rarely taught how to connect with and understand our emotions, and so when we experience difficult feelings like sadness, disappointment, shame, fear, grief, and pain, we don’t know how to engage them in a helpful way. But that can change. We will work together to promote positive change and restore direction, meaning, and resilience during these difficult times. We will be teammates in our work together.

Being alive in a complex and unknown world is difficult, as humans we are daily managing our emotions, instincts, desires, frustrations, confusions, and joys. This is no simple task, and difficult to do alone. That is where the work of psychotherapy comes in to provide a path forward. By creating a space of acceptance, presence, and honesty together we can move towards building more security and freedom to live and enjoy life.

I work well with individuals who find themselves struggling with various issues and are in need of a safe place to talk about them. Perhaps the idea of change or addressing things scares you or you're not sure where to begin or what you're looking for. I am happy to hold space for you and go on that journey with you. I believe that you are the expert of yourself and while I may have education and experience, at the end of the day you're the expert of you and I'm there to help support and guide anyway I can.

There are a number of reasons people choose to seek out therapy: grief and loss, an unexpected crisis, or a difficult life transition just to name a few. But when you are dealing with increased stress or feeling "stuck," it can be even more difficult to manage life's challenges or utilize former ways of coping in an effective way. Whatever your reason for seeking out therapy, my goal is to create a safe, supportive space to explore existential questions, gain a fresh perspective, and build hope that change is possible.

I have no ideal person who might consult me. I try hard to avoid placing people in theories. What matters is the relationship I will have with you. In collaboration, we formulate the therapy goals and how best to achieve them. Each person brings his/her own entrenched detrimental beliefs, that have blocked achieving such complex goals as satisfaction in love and in work. In therapy, I expect those beliefs to be tested. Where I intervene has more to do with fostering resilience, and with the challenging of fears/anxieties that often accompany the sense of incapacity and isolation.

I approach my counseling with a belief that all children and young people have the potential to make positive change for themselves and for the world around them. I adapt my therapeutic approach to the client but often utilize strength-based counseling, positive talk therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to encourage personal growth while I coach and help guide the way. I believe counseling has the power to change the direction of your life, by developing techniques, skills, and perspective that builds confidence and creates social emotional growth that lasts a lifetime.

I believe that one of the greatest ways that we can empower ourselves to navigate a wide variety of issues is by developing self-awareness and self-compassion. I enjoy working with clients who want a collaborative relationship with their therapist and are willing to approach our work with curiosity and an open mind. I also love to empower individuals and partners with the tools they need to create the changes they seek in their own lives, which requires a mutual investment in and commitment to our work together.

I have been working with children and families, teens and young adults for more than 30 years. With genuine warmth and hopeful optimism I connect with individuals through virtual counseling or (weather permitting) as we walk and talk on Alki. Building a supportive relationship is foundational to helping clients understand and manage emotions, gain skills for communication and work through life’s challenges. Every one of us must learn to understand, appreciate and accept ourselves as unique individuals. Helping others find their voice in this process is my goal and great joy.

My goal is to help clients transform their pain into an opportunity for self-discovery, healing and empowerment, to ultimately reclaim their voice, purpose, and self-worth. I welcome individuals who feel disconnected, overwhelmed, lost, or that they "don't belong" as well as people who have experienced abuse or struggle with negative self image and a harsh inner critic. I believe that our ability to heal is connected to, and reliant upon our connections with each other. I work virtually with clients all over Washington state.

I am an anxious human. How do I fix it? How can I cope? I cannot find the answers through all the things I am trying (sleep, less screen time, mindfulness, etc). My anxiety impacts my day to day life and I can't seem to connect with anyone. I get in rabbit holes where my depression not only limits me but I disassociate. Hi, my name is Allie and I am a psychotherapist that works with individuals who want to unpack the layers of anxiety and depression that do not serve them. My social work education impacts the way I do this work by understanding human behavior in a system perspective.

Anger Management Therapists

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
